Under the combined supervision of the medical director and supervisor of the cutting room, the Pathologist Assistant assists in the gross description and dissection of all types of tissues sent to the surgical pathology laboratory for analysis, including high-complexity specimens. Pathologist Assistants are an integral part of the resident training by educating pathology residents in proper dissection of surgical pathology specimens and appropriate submission of tissues for microscopic analysis thereby ensuring standardization of specimen processing and patient safety.
Primary Responsibilities
Performs the full scope of Pathologists' Assistant duties, including gross examination, dissection, and specimen preparation (see Additional Responsibilities below)
Serves as a resource and point of contact for technical staff, trainees, and physicians within the assigned area
Provides guidance, training, and performance feedback to staff
Supports workflow efficiency, problem resolution, and continuous improvement initiatives
Assists in maintaining regulatory compliance, documentation, and quality assurance standards
Participates in development, revision, and implementation of policies, procedures, and best practices
Autopsy Lead Responsibilities:
Coordinate and support autopsy services; participate in PA hiring, serve as liaison between staff and residents, and oversee autopsy suite operations
Train residents and PA students; develop and implement SOPs; ensure compliance with regulatory standards and proper documentation
Maintain cleanliness and supplies in the autopsy suite; manage autopsy tissue disposition and “Morgue Documentation” system
Perform all other duties as assigned to support excellence in autopsy service delivery
Surgical Grossing Room Duties:
Oversee the surgical grossing room’s operations, ensuring quality, safety, and regulatory compliance
Develop staff schedules, participate in hiring and performance evaluations, and serve as liaison between PAs, pathologists, and technical staff
Develop and implement standard operating procedures, respond to safety concerns, prepare for inspections, and facilitate weekly team meetings to support effective communication and workflow
Additional Responsibilities
Dictate gross descriptions and dissect all types of surgical specimens, including high-complexity specimens
Select appropriate tissue sections for microscopic examination and understand necessary sections for diagnosis, staging tumors, margin evaluation, and lymph node evaluation
Assist and educate residents with orientation, gross descriptions, and dissection of all types of surgical pathology specimens
Operate laboratory information system to achieve appropriate specimen handling per SOPs
May perform autopsies, including securing proper legal authorization for postmortem examination
May perform intraoperative consultations, including gross description, selection of tissues for sectioning, microtomy, and tissue staining
Assist in collecting and submitting tissue for a variety of needs, such as controls, teaching, research, and tissue banking
Participate in daily quality assurance activities such as review of daily specimen tracking sheets
Triage tissues for special studies including enzyme histochemistry, fluorescent in situ hybridization, electron microscopy, and molecular studies
Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in Pathologist Assistant program in progress and completed prior to start date required
New graduates and out-of-state Master's trained Pathologist Assistants must obtain ASCP certification within 3‑6 months of hire date
License ASCP Registration required
Advanced technical computer skills required for functional area and related systems support
Registration by the American Association of Pathologist Assistants required
Two years of experience in an academic medical center setting

Customer Service: Ability to provide high-level customer service and staff training to meet department standards and resolve service issues timely and respectfully
Physical Requirements Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds frequently. Requires standing, walking, bending, twisting, lifting up to 10 lbs, frequent sitting and keyboard use.
Pay Range $57.75 – $77.72 per hour. Base hourly wage range; compensation may exceed based on shift differentials, overtime, and other pay practices.
Vaccination Requirement All staff must be vaccinated against influenza as a condition of employment.
