Family Defense Practice Staff Attorney National Legal Aid & Defender Association (The Bronx Defenders, BxD) is a public defender nonprofit in the South Bronx that pioneered a holistic defense model to provide a multidisciplinary team of attorneys, social workers, and advocates for criminal, family, civil, and immigration cases.

Founded in 1997, BxD now has more than 400 staff members defending nearly 20,000 New Yorkers annually. The organization combines courtroom advocacy with community organizing, legislative advocacy, and impact litigation to effect systemic change and shares its model with other public defenders nationwide.

Family Defense Practice BxD’s Family Defense Practice (FDP) offers legal representation and social work support to parents charged with child abuse and neglect who risk losing custody. FDP attorneys primarily litigate abuse and neglect cases and also address custody, visitation, and termination of parental rights matters.

Responsibilities

Zealously represent parents in child protective proceedings and related matters in Bronx Family Court.

Litigate abuse and neglect cases in hearings and trials, preparing oral and written arguments.

Effectively communicate and negotiate with judges, caseworkers, child attorneys, and Administration for Children’s Services representatives.

Assist parents in accessing resources and services to restore parental rights.

Collaborate with social workers, parent advocates, and attorneys in related practice areas on enmeshed issues.

Provide coverage for cases to ensure comprehensive client care.

Maintain client case files and data within BxD’s case-management system.

Mentor junior attorneys, supervise interns and externs, and conduct internal trainings with the FDP Training Department.
