The Commissioning (Cx) Studio team in the Davenport office seeks a Commissioning Engineer 2. This role provides Cx project management by reviewing evolving design, testing as‑built enclosures and equipment, and monitoring systems and energy use while working closely with clients, contractors, architects, and MEP engineers.

Position Overview A Commissioning Engineer 2 will expand the team, lead projects, and mentor entry‑level engineers while analyzing buildings and integrated components. Commissioning is a quality assurance process that monitors design evolution, tests as‑built building enclosures and equipment, and monitors building systems operation and energy use. This role has a major impact on sustainable performance by ensuring buildings perform as designed to reduce energy use and carbon footprint.

Essential Job Functions

Technical

Apply engineering knowledge to understand building systems.

Understand building codes and apply them to proposed plans.

Conduct quality assurance reviews of engineering quality and technical content.

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Project Design

Survey existing buildings and identify discipline‑specific systems and components.

Interpret architectural, mechanical, and electrical design documents.

Read and understand construction documents, floor plans, specifications, and equipment data.

Review design documents for LEED and energy code compliance to ensure sustainable operation.

Understand sequences of operation in control equipment and spot problems that prevent proper operation.

Review, provide, or edit commissioning‑related project specifications.

Write functional tests for equipment based on design and construction documents.

Construction Management

Review submittals and RFIs and identify deviations from design intent.

Perform design reviews and seek input from senior staff.

Conduct site visits and prepare field observation reports.

Ensure engineering quality, accurate content, and compliance with project documents.

Perform functional testing in the field and collect building system data using control systems and portable logging equipment.

Execution of Tasks

Evaluate and submit documentation for LEED, WELL Building, and other green building certifications.

Diagnose, analyze, troubleshoot, and solve complex building system problems with assistance from senior staff.

Prioritize work effectively.

Communicate directly with the construction team and building owners professionally.

Professional Development

Current or ability to obtain a Professional Commissioning Certification.

Receive guidance from senior engineers to improve performance capacity.

Seek out and apply new information and processes from external sources.

Requirements

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in an accredited and related 4‑year engineering program.

Engineering work background: minimum 3–7+ years of experience.

Previous commissioning, design, construction, or facilities field experience preferred.

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for project office functions.

Provide clear and well‑written memorandums, emails, and reports to clients and project stakeholders regarding system performance and energy‑efficiency evaluations.

Adaptability to work on a flexible schedule as needed.

Willingness to travel, occasionally overnight, up to 20% per year.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

E.I.T. or P.E. preferred.

Previous construction, facilities management, or quality assurance experience.

Specialty skills and/or certifications in LEED AP, CEM, CBCP, etc.

Knowledge of building codes, design guidelines, and industry construction standards.

Work Environment Most duties are performed in an office environment with hybrid and remote‑only work policies. Some duties involve trips to construction sites and field site visits. The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand, and perform field work. The typical week consists of five ‑ eight‑hour shifts. Climbing stairs and enduring typical construction site conditions are required. A valid driver’s license is required. The employee may be required to conduct occasional overnight travel depending on home location and frequent local field visits in the office metro area.
