Responsibilities Perform responsible work in the enforcement of animal control ordinances that cover various animals, including those that may be diseased, unlicensed, dangerous, and stray. Capture unlicensed, stray, uncontrolled, sick, or injured domestic animals, livestock, or wildlife by means of traps, catch pole or other accepted means and transport them to the animal shelter.

Enforce the city’s ordinances: issue warning notices to owners of domestic animals, livestock, and wildlife that are in violation; investigate and respond to complaints of cruelty to animals and violations of the animal control ordinances; work in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies; testify in court regarding violations.

Perform duties that ensure the welfare of the animals in the shelter: make daily rounds to check animals in all areas of the shelter, ensuring satisfactory conditions, security, and proper enclosure; report illness, deaths, or abnormal behavior or physical condition; help to care for injured animals; administer medications prescribed by veterinarian; assist with euthanasia of shelter animals and properly dispose of remains.

Handle, prepare, and/or maintain the appropriate paperwork necessary to the functions of this position: prepare impoundment or disposition tickets; assist with the completion and maintenance of records on each animal at the shelter; complete daily work records; file offense reports.

Provide customer assistance to the visiting public: show animals for adoption; complete adoption papers; collect fees.

May assist in feeding and care of animals, disinfecting kennels, and maintenance of the facility.

Assist the supervisor in preparing and conducting educational programs for the public regarding animal control, to generate interest and support.

Operate a personal computer as well as other office equipment; two-way radio, hand tools, animal capture equipment such as traps, snares, catch pole, and snake handling equipment.

Qualifications High School diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) years of experience in capturing, handling, and caring for animals and work involving a moderate degree of interaction with the public; or any combination of education and experience which provides the skills and abilities requisite for this position.

Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must complete the basic animal control training course within one year and maintain it throughout employment. May be required to obtain the state of Louisiana certified animal euthanasia technician certification. Will be required to obtain and maintain required trainings and certifications as necessary by regulatory agencies. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
