Position Summary The Principal Investigator (Archaeologist) will manage and oversee archaeological investigations, including Phase I III fieldwork across Texas and surrounding states. This role involves supervising teams, conducting field and lab research, analyzing artifacts, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. The successful candidate will also contribute to growing JMT’s cultural resources group in Texas and support business development initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage small to medium archaeological projects and co-manage large-scale investigations.
Serve as field lead for Phase I III archaeological fieldwork, ensuring adherence to standards and schedules.
Conduct research and artifact analysis for historic and prehistoric sites.
Document methodologies, findings, and conclusions in detailed archaeological reports.
Review and write sections of technical reports, site forms, and related documentation.
Evaluate project alternatives and recommend strategies to mitigate impacts on archaeological resources.
Collaborate with field, lab, and office staff, as well as senior management, to maintain quality and compliance.
Assist in business development efforts through proposals, budgeting, and marketing materials.
Required Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Anthropology or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Qualification Standards for Archaeologists.
5+ years of professional archaeological experience (CRM experience preferred).
Minimum 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
In-depth knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Antiquities Code of Texas.
Eligibility to obtain a Texas Antiquities Permit.
Regional experience in Texas, Oklahoma, or Louisiana (historic and/or prehistoric archaeology).
Proven ability to lead and supervise Phase I III fieldwork.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Must provide a writing sample (thesis, dissertation, or archaeological report).
Valid driver’s license required.
Experience collaborating with Federal Agencies and Tribal Nations.
Provide three professional references with contact information.
Preferred Qualifications
Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) or ability to obtain registration.
Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Google Earth, or similar GIS software.
Prior success in obtaining a Texas Antiquities Permit.
Significant laboratory and curation experience.
Skills & Competencies
