Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center that combines research and manufacturing in a single location. This first‑ever facility will advance process optimization, increase capacity for clinical‑trial medicines, reduce costs and environmental impact, and support innovative solutions.

Position Overview The Associate Director, Small Molecule Process Engineering provides leadership and direction to process engineers, ensuring engineering deliverables are resourced and qualified to support the production and business agenda. The role focuses on productivity, development of the team, and reliable, compliant equipment and systems used in manufacturing small‑molecule or peptide products. As Team Leader, you will influence functional teams to support the process engineering agenda, business plan priorities, and compliance objectives, while helping to build a new organization and culture during the startup phase (2025‑2027).

Key Responsibilities

Establish a technically advanced process engineering group through recruitment, supervision, coaching, succession planning and actionable development plans, including performance reviews and development planning.

Provide process engineering work coordination and guidance to key functional groups and partners.

In coordination with engineering, set and reinforce standards for engineering work product and utilization of first principles; partner across functional teams to influence and implement the technical agenda, site business plan objectives, and GMP Quality Plan objectives.

Identify, track, and report key indicators of functional performance.

Oversee engineering related technical issues, improvement initiatives, and technology upgrades; review and approve engineering related deviations and change controls.

Partner appropriately in site planning processes (capital and resource), representing the team’s interests while considering the overall site picture and future portfolio.

Ensure technical review and approval for documents such as investigations, change controls, regulatory submissions, expert opinions, validations, annual product reviews, manufacturing tickets, procedures, process flow documents, personnel qualification strategies, control strategies, and technical studies.

Interact with regulators, customers, or other stakeholders on business issues or to support internal and external agency audits.

Network globally to share best practices, rationale, and control strategies to ensure harmonization and alignment between sites.

Startup Phase Leadership

Build the organization with the necessary capability, capacity, and culture to operate the facility to the highest standards of operational excellence.

Develop and implement the systems and processes needed to run the site, using existing Lilly knowledge and practices where necessary, while also incorporating external experiences and learning.

Ensure regulatory compliance and operational excellence by supporting lean principles in the respective area.

Support the project team as they deliver the facility to the site team by providing feedback and support.

Basic Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical Engineering preferred).

Minimum of 5 years of experience in process engineering supporting small‑molecule manufacturing or development activities, preferably in manufacturing.

Leadership experience preferred.

Additional Preferences

Capable of collaborating effectively within a team, making autonomous decisions, and influencing a diverse range of groups.

Skilled at fostering teamwork within the department and showcasing essential interpersonal skills.

Proficient in devising creative solutions to plant, divisional, and corporate issues, while leveraging insights from various functional areas.

Initial location: Lilly Technology Center, Indianapolis.

Permanent location: new Lilly Medicines Foundry, Lebanon, Indiana.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $118,500 – $173,800. Full‑time equivalent employees are also eligible for a company bonus (depending on company and individual performance).
