DESCRIPTION Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Art + Film invites applicants for a full-time, academic year, tenure‑track faculty position with an emphasis in Media Arts, with a primary focus on teaching film production from an interdisciplinary perspective. We seek an artist‑scholar who integrates creative and ethical storytelling in their work and engages with interdisciplinary practices. Candidates with the ability to teach cinematography and/or sound design preferred. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of the new BFA in Media Arts and help shape its future direction. We are particularly interested in candidates who engage with hybrid or collaborative practices that intersect with Animation, Design, Sound, Photography, or other emerging media fields. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in filmmaking and a strong ability to teach across at least one additional emphasis area within the program-Animation, Design, Sound, or Photography.
DEPARTMENT The Department of Art + Film at Cal Poly Humboldt offers accredited undergraduate degrees through the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Programs include a Bachelor of Arts in Art, with concentrations in Studio Art and Art Education; a BA in Art History & Museum Studies; a Bachelor of Arts in Film; a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fine Arts; and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Arts. The department currently enrolls over 300 majors and is supported by around 25 full- and part‑time faculty members. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include teaching undergraduate courses in film production and interdisciplinary media arts (animation, design, sound, photography), supporting capstone projects and collaborative, cross‑disciplinary work, and contributing to curriculum development, advising students, and defining the direction of the Media Arts major as it evolves and grows. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include advising students, participation in campus and system‑wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure, and promotion.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The Assistant Professor Classification annual salary range for this position is $74,652 – $158,688; the anticipated starting annual salary is $80,000.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS An earned MFA (or other terminal degree) in Media Arts or closely related field from an accredited institution is required at the time of appointment.
Record of training or experience in the field of Media Arts;
Excellence in, or clear potential for, university‑level teaching in film production and interdisciplinary media arts with a student centered approach;
Broad knowledge of media art technologies, concepts, and practices;
Record of professional achievement in one or more areas (Film, Animation, Design, Sound, Photography), evidenced by festivals, exhibitions, publications, commissions, and awards;
Demonstrated experience working effectively with a diverse student population;
Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity addressing issues of concern facing students from diverse backgrounds in higher education;
Ability to design and update curriculum that reflects forward thinking and contemporary practices in media arts; and
Demonstrated commitment to collegiality and meaningful participation in departmental and community life.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Evidence of successful university teaching beyond the teaching assistant level;
Experience in leadership or administration within an arts or academic environment;
Record of service or professional engagement contributing to shared governance or institutional development;
Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration across programs or community partnerships.
