REPORTS TO: Building Principal
Position Purpose Topeka Public Schools science educators demonstrate a commitment to learning for all students by maintaining organized, student‑centered classrooms, presenting content‑rich and standards‑based lessons and activities, meeting individual needs through the use of assessments and data, and using a variety of instructional strategies that reflect current best practices and research.
Qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in science education and a passing score on the state required Praxis test.
ESOL endorsement preferred.
Possession of a valid Kansas Teaching license for grades 9‑12 and an endorsement to teach Earth Space Science.
Strong content knowledge in secondary level science.
Record of successful completion of teaching experience and/or student teaching experience.
Consistent, reliable attendance is required.
Physical/Emotional Requirements While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, hear, stand, reach with hands and arms, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must interact with staff, meet demands from several people, and may be required to work extended hours.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Teach knowledge and skills in Earth Space Science to students using the district‑approved curriculum.
Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids stressing the scientific method and relevant laboratory learning methods.
Plan and demonstrate a balanced Earth Space Science instructional program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments; organize laboratory activities and procedures for optimum learning.
Provide individual and small‑group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities and accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly and productive environment.
Instruct students in proper care and use of materials; organize storage areas and control use of materials to prevent loss or abuse.
Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and understanding and prepare progress reports.
Assist in the selection and requisition of instructional materials and maintain inventory control.
Maintain professional competence through professional development education activities provided by the District and/or in self‑selected professional growth activities.
Communicate with students, parents, and school counselors on student progress.
Cooperate in school‑wide supervision of students during out‑of‑classroom activities.
Participate in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
Terms of Employment 9 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.
Evaluation Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board policy on evaluation of professional certified employees.
