Qualifications
Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
Continues to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
Responsibilities REPORTS TO: The athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.
SUPERVISES: Assists in advising, coordinating, and supporting a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.
Program Management
Has thorough knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools' Board of Education and is responsible for implementing them.
Has knowledge of existing system, state, and league regulations; implements them consistently and interprets them for staff.
Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
Staff Responsibilities
Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
Designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and analyzes staff effectiveness at season’s end.
Performs other duties assigned by the athletic director or principal.
Administrative Duties
Assists the athletic director in scheduling, transportation, and requirements for tournament and special sport events.
Prepares to hold scheduled sport events or practices, adheres to scheduled facility times, and coordinates the program with maintenance and school employees.
Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
Advises the athletic director and recommends policy, method, or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
Serves as a mentor, promoting the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Gives constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct.
Provides presence at all practices, games, and travels, offering assistance, guidance, and safeguards.
Provides training rules and sport-specific regulations to each participant.
Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits within 24 hours.
Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
Determines discipline, delineates due process procedures, and contracts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
Assists athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
Finance and Equipment
Participates in budgeting with the athletic director, establishing requirements for the next season.
Recommends equipment guidelines (type, style, color, technical specifications) to stay within budget.
Accounts for all equipment, collects costs for lost or unreturned items, and manages issuance, storage, and reconditioning.
Submits annual inventory and current records concerning equipment.
Marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing access.
Ensures athletes use only authorized areas and times.
Examines locker rooms before and after use, checking cleanliness and maintenance.
Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks when custodians are absent.
Instills respect for equipment and school property among athletes.
Public Relations
Organizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
Promotes the sport within and outside the school through recruiting, media, and community programs.
Ensures quality, effectiveness, and validity of oral or written releases to local media.
Maintains good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
Presents information to media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
General Expectations
All athletes exhibit social character development, self‑discipline, confidence, and pride.
Coach upgrades knowledge and skills through clinics, observations, and consultation.
Program success influences community image; coach balances competitiveness with sportsmanship and mental health.
