The City of Richmond Police Department is accepting applications for Police Officer - Lateral.

The purpose of this class is to execute general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Responsibilities include patrolling the city, responding to citizen calls, conducting preliminary investigations, and maintaining police records. Work is performed according to set procedures under general supervision.

Patrolling assigned city jurisdiction for traffic and other violations using patrol car, motorcycle, bicycle, and horse.

Making traffic stops and intervening in criminal activity.

Conducting general field services, including monitoring police radio and responding to calls and complaints.

Obtaining and issuing warrants.

Marking and packaging evidence.

Processing crime scenes.

Investigating potential arson cases.

Providing surveillance.

Interviewing suspects, witnesses, and following up with victims.

Fingerprinting and photographing suspects.

Conducting computer searches to gather suspect information.

Preparing for and participating in court prosecutions.

Engaging with community agencies and groups.

Responding to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information.

Maintaining case files, data, and preparing reports.

Performing other duties as assigned.

Successful completion of an interview, background investigation (including polygraph), physical, and drug/alcohol screening is required. The background process may take 60-90 days. Disqualified applicants may reapply after one year.

Must have met criteria for previous Career Development level for Police Recruit and have one year of sworn Law Enforcement Officer experience. Preferred candidates are currently certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. To qualify for a waiver of Basic Training, two criteria must be met:

Option 1: At least 36 months of certified experience prior to separation.

And: Separation from employment less than 24 months ago.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of basic math, English, operation of police equipment, firearms; skills in diffusing hostile situations, interpreting laws, driving, report writing, communication; abilities in problem solving, maintaining composure, following procedures, exercising discretion, respecting diversity, and making timely decisions.

Minimum Training and Experience:

High school diploma or GED.

Equivalent training and experience may be accepted.

Licensing and Certifications:

US citizenship.

Valid Virginia Driver's License.

Virginia Law Enforcement Certification.
