About the Job Overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic and hands‑on leadership of all financial operations at the University of Minnesota Alumni Association (UMAA), a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving more than 533,000 alumni worldwide. Reporting to the President and CEO, the CFO oversees accounting, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, cash management, risk management and audit functions, while also managing HR and IT with University support. a member of the senior leadership team, the CFO partners closely with peers, staff, board members, and external stakeholders to ensure financial stewardship, operational excellence, and scalable growth in support of UMAA’s mission. Essential Functions

Lead and oversee all accounting and finance operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and effective internal controls. Manage annual operating and capital budgeting processes; oversee forecasting and alignment with University of Minnesota financial systems. Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO, Finance & Audit Committee, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors. Direct annual audit, IRS filings, and business filings; ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and reporting requirements. Supervise and develop the accounting team. Manage risk, insurance, contracts, and compliance, with external counsel. Oversee HR functions including performance management, hiring, onboarding, compensation reviews, and personnel records. Serve as UMAA liaison to University IT; lead financial system improvements including ERP implementation and expense management tools. Provide financial analysis, insight, and recommendations to support strategic decision‑making and long‑term sustainability. Partner with University of Minnesota Foundation Investment Advisors on fund management. Serve as member and Secretary of Board of Directors of University Gateway Corporation. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. 10+ years of progressive accounting / finance experience. Experience in nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and compliance. Strong communication skills with the ability to present complex financial information to non‑financial stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and implement process improvements. Hands‑on accounting and financial management experience with strong attention to detail. Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or business administration. At least 5 years in a leadership role. Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Experience working with boards of directors and finance / audit committees. Familiarity with HR management and IT oversight. Proven track record leading financial system transitions (ERP or similar). Ability to navigate university systems or other large, complex organizations. About the Department
