Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 (PCN 112160) Permanent seasonal full‑time position located in Fairbanks. Responsible for customer service in the Regional Wildlife Information Center, support field and logistical operations for research and management biologists across Interior and Northeast Alaska, and public information and service in the ADF&G Public Information Center.

What You Will Be Doing Primary source of public information and service: provide customer support related to hunting and trapping regulations, issue permits and harvest tickets, sell licenses and tags, collect and record harvest data, perform animal sealing (bears, furs, sheep), maintain vehicles and equipment, classify, analyze, and summarize harvest data. Support wildlife management and research through fieldwork, including aerial surveys, nuisance wildlife response, and wildlife capture and handling.

The Working Conditions You Can Expect Office work at ADF&G office 1300 College Road in Fairbanks. Regular computer use, in‑person and phone public service, teamwork. Fieldwork throughout the year may involve exposure to wildlife, biting insects, inclement weather, firearms, low‑level aircraft flights, and travel by boat or skiff. Aerial surveys in small aircraft at low altitude for extended periods in cold conditions.

Exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, low‑level flying, travel by boat or skiff, contact with immobilizing drugs and chemicals.

Who We Are Looking For

Providing high‑quality customer service to diverse groups, explaining complex hunting, fishing, and trapping regulations and interacting professionally with occasionally agitated or angry customers.

Demonstrating knowledge of Alaska’s plants, animals, fish, and habitats, engaging in discussions with hunters, trappers, anglers, and wildlife viewers, and assisting the public with human‑wildlife interactions and intervening when necessary.

Handling money and data accurately, maintaining records, entering data, following established instructions and protocols; proficiency using computer programs for data entry, analysis, and archiving.

Working with animal carcasses or animal parts, which may be unpleasant, and handling live animals including trapping, hazing, and euthanizing when necessary while ensuring safety of self, team, and animals.

Working both independently and as part of a team, in office, laboratory, or remote field settings.

Special Note A valid driver’s license is required. The position may have access to firearms/ammunition. High school graduation or equivalent. Six months experience at developmental level Fish and Wildlife Technician or aide (equivalent to Technician 2). One year technical laboratory/field experience involving fish or wildlife research, or a commercial fisher, guide, trapper, or subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions

Additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or laboratory may substitute for high school graduation.

Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for up to two years of technical laboratory or field experience.

Special Requirements Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low‑level flying, travel by boat or skiff, contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
