Job Summary
Under general supervision, to perform routine janitorial duties in County buildings; may perform non‑routine janitorial work as needed; keep assigned areas and County buildings clean and orderly, and perform related duties as assigned. This classification is a for‑cause, non‑exempt position.

Janitor I: $17.93 – $22.90
Janitor II: $19.81 – $25.30
Janitor III: $21.46 – $27.40

Janitor I

Janitor III
Definition
Fully experienced working level with lead direction and training responsibilities. Provides direction, coordination, and training to other janitorial staff.

Incumbents perform routine janitorial work and may perform non‑routine work as assigned. Provide lead direction, coordination, and training to staff. Work locations vary; assignments may include irregular hours.

Essential Functions (Janitor I/II)
- Sweeping
- Mopping and scrubbing floors
- Cleans and vacuums rugs and carpets
- Waxes and polishes furniture and woodwork
- Cleans hallways, lobbies, restrooms, and offices
- Cleans ceilings, walls, blinds, and light fixtures
- Empties and cleans waste receptacles
- Polishes metal work
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms
- Replenishes supplies
- May wash windows
- May move and arrange furniture and equipment
- Turns out lights, sets alarms, locks doors and windows as needed
- Operates scrubbers, buffers, waxing machines, and other equipment
- Requisitions supplies as needed
- Observes and reports needed repairs
- Maintains equipment used during the course of work
- Empties paper recycling containers
- Replaces light bulbs and tubes
- May assist with basic building maintenance work
Essential Functions (Janitor III)
- Provides lead direction, coordination, and training to other staff
- Operates scrubbers, buffers, waxing machines, and other equipment
- Performs custodial work: vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, waxing, and buffing floors
- Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms, including restocking supplies
- Polishes brass fixtures
- Washes walls, woodwork, blinds, and windows
- Dusts and polishes all surfaces
- Moves and arranges furniture, equipment, office supplies, and files as needed
- Reports unusual or improper conditions and needs for extensive repair
- Maintains equipment used during the course of work
- Might turn out lights, set alarms, lock doors and windows as needed
- Provides safety training and proper use of equipment to janitorial staff
- Might inspect assigned buildings to ensure cleanliness standards
- Empties paper recycling containers, replaces light bulbs and tubes
- Might assist with basic building maintenance work
- Performs related duties as required

Typical Qualifications
Training & Experience
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical requirements vary by level:
- Janitor I – Prior janitorial or custodial experience desirable.
- Janitor II – At least one year of janitorial or custodial experience desirable.
- Janitor III – At least one year of experience, prior lead or supervisory experience desirable.
Special Requirements for All Levels
Additional security clearance may be required for assignments to certain offices. Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Background check, pre‑employment physical, drug testing, and fingerprinting required.
Typical Physical Requirements
- Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch regularly
- Lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs. without assistance; heavier items with assistance
- Use vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, waxing equipment, and basic hand tools
- Maintain manual dexterity, eye‑hand coordination, corrected vision and hearing
- Verbal communication required
Typical Working Conditions
Work is performed in building and outdoor environments at varying temperatures; exposure to cleaning solvents and chemicals may occur; limited contact with staff and the public.
