Additional Information About The Role

Shift information: 8 AM - 5 PM

Types of clients: Potential clients for behavioral health services. Persons referred from a variety of referral sources in the community, such as hospitals, Behavioral Health Response (BHR)—crisis line, ERs, various programs under the Department of Mental Health umbrella of services.

Location: 3309 South Kingshighway Facility, St. Louis City

Ideal Skill Set: Licensed LCSW or LPC. Mental health diagnosing and assessment — must be fully licensed or provisionally licensed in the state of MO. (LMSW/LCSW or PLPC/LPC)

Job responsibilities: Complete intake assessments on new clients to the agency, screen potential clients for eligibility for BJC BH services, be able to navigate electronic medical record and other computer systems.

Overview BJC Behavioral Health is a community health center that provides and coordinates behavioral health services for more than 8,000 seriously mentally ill adults and seriously emotionally disturbed children in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. François, Iron and Washington counties. As an Administrative Agent of the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH), BJC Behavioral Health serves as a major point of entry for people eligible for mental health services funded by DMH and is responsible for serving as a gatekeeper to the public mental health system.

Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose: The Intake Specialist provides the initial screening and evaluation of individuals seeking service from BJC Behavioral Health. This position will use its knowledge of eligibility requirements to refer and connect individuals to services, both internal and external, that will address the identified need.

Responsibilities

Provide an initial evaluation of need, triage services according to assessed need, and, if appropriate for BJC BH services, complete an initial psychosocial assessment and treatment plan that meets accrediting and third‑party payer requirements.

Ability to accurately evaluate an individual’s observed and stated symptoms and make recommendations based on these evaluations.

Training to perform a mental status exam.

Assess crisis and safety issues.

Assign an accurate provisional ICD‑10 diagnosis.

Administer standardized assessments that demonstrate inter‑rater reliability (e.g. DLA‑20, Level 1 Dx. Screenings, Suicide Risk Assessments).

Make recommendations that demonstrate current knowledge of mental illness and serious emotional disturbances.

Present information in a formal assessment presenting relevant history and current clinical picture.

Engage individuals and families to form a trusting relationship and gather accurate information to formulate realistic treatment goals.

Engage individuals in a non‑threatening empathetic manner.

Use language and behaviors that reflect and enhance dignity of individuals with mental illness.

Knowledgeable about growth and development stages of all age and ethnic groups and evidence‑based treatments.

Utilize best practice guidelines for interventions and support strategies.

Understand principles of a Children’s System of Care and Fidelity Wraparound.

Provide crisis prevention and intervention approaches across developmental stages.

Knowledge of societal, cultural, racial, gender, age issues related to mental illness and its treatment.

Knowledge about health issues and their impact on mental illness.

Knowledge about psychotropic medications.

Knowledge of services and levels of care at BJC BH and other community agencies.

Understand diagnostic, financial, and functional criteria for acceptance by teams and services.

Work collaboratively with team and across service system.

Assist team members with difficult cases.

Build positive working relationships within and across the service system.

Demonstrate competency to provide brief therapy to adults, children, and families.

Maintain clinical competency in therapies addressing problems resolved through individual or family action or thought processes, including motivational engagement.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Master’s Degree.

Experience:

2‑5 years.

License & Certifications:

LCSW or LPC.

Preferred Requirements:

Licensed Master Social Worker.
