Job Description And Duties The Division of Engineering Services (DES) – Structure Construction (SC) – is recruiting to fill a Transportation Engineer Civil (TEC) position located in Cameron Park, El Dorado County. Under the direction of a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor) in Structure Construction, the TEC classification is the entry, working, and journeyman level of professional engineering work in Caltrans. The incumbent performs a wide variety of professional engineering work in either an office or field setting; as incumbents progress in experience they will be assigned more difficult work.
This work is performed on highway construction projects involving bridges, buildings, walls, barriers, drainage structures, sign structures and appurtenances. The incumbent works as a field engineer to ensure contractors build structures in compliance with the contract documents (Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, contract plans and Special Provisions). May act as an Assistant Structure Representative or Assistant Resident Engineer/Resident Engineer on construction projects.
Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Civil in‑person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Please contact the exam unit at

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required when operating a state or personal vehicle on official business in performance of duties driving to various field locations as required.
Resume is required. Failure to include resume will result in disqualification from employment consideration.
Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. The SOQ must be typed, no more than 2 pages, single‑spaced, using 12‑point font. SOQ must be typed and not accept resume as substitute. The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate’s ability to respond to the questions below, providing information clearly and concisely in writing.
