Performs duties as Preconstruction survey crew chief which include topographical, cadastral, location, hydrographic and control surveys by gathering all information necessary for Columbia Office to plan, design plans and award to contract. Develops and prepares computer survey data files needed for CADD development of projects. This includes providing codes with all survey data points in manner that facilitates the electronic drafting/mapping of the survey through the SCDOT CADD software. Performs computations and adjust survey data to SC State Plane Coordinates.

Under the direction and supervision of a SC Registered Land Surveyor, performs and supervises subordinate crew members in the following types of surveys:

Boundary survey field work and research.

Aerial mapping ground controls surveys.

Surveys to stake project right of way lines for the appraisal and acquisition of new right of way for individual property tracts.

Establishes property corners and property lines. Information regarding this is obtained wherever possible to include: Contact with the property owners, contact with public officials, courthouse research to locate deeds, plats and property tax maps.

Maintains daily work log. Enters working time and charges codes into time sheet in ESS. Maintains personal information in ESS.

Ensure safety procedures are followed in the field to keep work area as safe as possible.

Supervises staff to include preparing performance planning and evaluation documents and related personnel paperwork. Coaches, counsels and trains employees to carry out specific surveying duties. Establishes and monitors work processes. Implements management policies and initiatives and promotes teamwork within the organization.

Assists with and/or oversees the operation, calibration, and maintenance of basic equipment and job safety, including placement and maintenance of signs.

Maintains personal daily work log and utilizes ESS in SCEIS to enter work time with charge codes and leave request and maintain personal information. Performs other related duties as assigned.

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and one (1) year of engineering or construction management work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. This position may require travel. This position may require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. This position required driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. This position may be exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
