About the Department The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides 1.1 billion gallons of high‑quality drinking water, manages wastewater and storm‑water, and protects public health for all New Yorkers. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, operating a system that spans a 2,000‑square‑mile watershed with 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes.
Responsibilities
Assist in supervising water and wastewater system projects within the 125‑mile watershed, including dams, aqueducts, treatment plants, bridges, and roadways.
Plan, coordinate, and direct the design and construction phases of projects, ensuring compliance with DEP protocols.
Monitor permit requirements and resolve project issues, working closely with regulatory agencies.
Conduct reliable field condition surveys, prepare accurate reports on physical observations.
Review contract documents, codes, and regulations; compare to project requirements to identify deficiencies.
Participate in field investigations to develop alternative approaches that meet project objectives.
Collaborate with the construction management team to perform inspections of construction activity.
Attend all required environmental compliance and safety training classes.
Work extended days and perform field work that may involve standing on uneven surfaces, steep slopes, and stairs in all weather conditions.
Preferred Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
Operational knowledge of motor vehicles for site visits, equipment testing, and stakeholder meetings.
Understanding of project management principles, especially DEP procedures.
Excellent oral and written communication, ability to meet deadlines, and flexibility in task allocation.
Demonstrated critical thinking and effective independent data analysis.
Qualifications
A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college plus at least one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; OR
A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college and a Master’s degree in civil engineering.
Eligibility for the 55‑a Program; indicate intent in the application.
