JLA Public Involvement is seeking a full-time senior program coordinator to work on a fast-paced team in Portland, OR (temporarily remote). Salary: $52,000 - $65,000 a year. The role involves solving problems, learning continually, tracking multiple tasks, and self-direction. Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills are essential for helping the public engage with government agencies about projects that affect daily life.
Overview
Position: Senior Program Coordinator (full-time)
Location: Portland, OR 97205 (temporarily remote)
Reports to: JLA team; involvement with government projects and public engagement
Responsibilities
Solve problems and be curious as you help clients and the JLA team figure out how to communicate, run meetings or events, and engage with the community. Build understanding of public involvement principles through work and training. Work closely with managers to track details on an average of 10 projects. Schedule and plan logistics for public and internal events and meetings; coordinate with teammates to produce materials or surveys; respond to emails and phone calls from stakeholders; facilitate and take notes at virtual and in-person meetings; summarize meetings, events, and public comments. Be a critical team member across several projects, collaborating with multiple internal and external teams. Provide quality control to ensure clients receive polished work products. Manage upward and with peers and seek help as needed. Summarize complex information by asking questions and capturing key messages from meetings, conversations, and documents. Rewrite and explain information so the public can understand issues across a range of projects (e.g., roadway and transportation, wastewater treatment, long-range planning, and others). Communicate with a wide range of people with curiosity, respect, and kindness. Interact with the public and with internal teams to complete summaries, reports, and data processing of feedback received. Be self-directed. You will be assigned work and will also seek out work from others. Work independently and with others on a fast-paced team to deliver tasks on time and within budget. Be responsive to clients (government agencies and the public) who expect responsible stewardship of public funds while balancing community needs. Required
Relevant work experience (1–4 years) and/or an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a person-first (or public-facing) field such as journalism, public relations, communications, community outreach, education, event planning, politics/governance, planning, or similar. Customer/service experience at any level, with strong interpersonal skills and ability to move things forward. Strong communication skills, including comfort with public speaking and writing; ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Comfort working with people in-person (dependent on health protocols) and virtually (Zoom, Microsoft Teams). Project management skills to drive complex projects with collaborative teams including peers and senior staff. Desired
Ability to work with limited information, ask questions, and rewrite/explain complex information so the public can understand the issue; curiosity about learning. Education, training, or volunteer experience related to working with people (facilitation, de-escalation, mediation, communications, etc.). Ability to speak another language besides English and provide informal translations at events or with the public (professional interpretation not required). Experience with online engagement tools (websites, online surveys, social media). Previous experience tracking and reporting hours to specific jobs or clients, or working in a consulting environment.
