We are seeking a certified Peer Support Specialist or Certified Recovery Mentor to work in our low-barrier substance use disorders program at the BHRN-Behavioral Health Regional Network. Be part of a dynamic, caring, and compassionate outreach team that provides low-barrier SUD treatment, peer mentoring, case management, employment, and housing social work. The position is located at our Madras BHRN Engagement Center, open daily from 8:00 am–10:00 pm with shifts that may include late afternoon, evening, or weekends.

Job Summary The Peer Support Specialist will provide support and encouragement to individuals with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in hospital and outpatient settings to facilitate recovery skills, empower self-directed recovery, and support the learning and use of skills needed to foster recovery. The role requires knowledge of available service options, promotion of natural support systems, and collaboration with a treatment team to align with BestCare’s policies, best practices, and applicable state and federal regulations.

Essential Functions

Work with other staff as part of a treatment team to maintain healthy staff-to-staff and staff-to-client relationships.

Provide respectful, compassionate care and model recovery to clients who request services.

Make telephone contacts to support clients and remind them of assessments, groups, individual sessions, medication management appointments, and other BestCare services.

Identify clients’ abilities, strengths, and assets and assist them to recognize and use them.

Identify barriers to participation and develop strategies and resources to overcome them.

Provide recovery mentor services at the hospital and manage an assigned caseload.

Participate in group recovery sessions as needed.

Provide services within the Intentional Peer Support model.

Transport clients to appointments when appropriate and approved by supervisor, including to/from outpatient services and other agencies to access benefits.

Refer clients to various services (e.g., Food Bank, LINC, primary care, community college, parenting resources).

Ensure timely, complete client documentation in the EHR, reflecting clinical best practices and compliance with state and BestCare standards.

Maintain strong relationships with community partners and foster collaboration when possible.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Manager.

Required Competencies

Strong understanding of person-centered services with a recovery-oriented focus.

Understanding of trauma-informed care and the Intentional Peer Support model.

Ability to engage clients empathetically and to build trusting, collaborative relationships with clients and families.

Proficiency in MS Office 365, EHR platforms, databases, virtual meeting tools, and willingness to learn new software.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality per HIPAA, 42 CFR, and Oregon statutes.

Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; excellent communication (oral and written).

Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through; ability to meet deadlines.

Critical thinking, conflict resolution, and ability to work in diverse, high-paced environments.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Qualifications Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Must meet Oregon Administrative Rules definition of a peer: an individual with lived experience of addictions or mental health services, or a family member of someone with those experiences.

For individuals in recovery from substance-use disorder, must have maintained continuous recovery for the previous two years at the time of hire.

Licenses and Certifications

Must hold a Peer Support Specialist certification from a state-approved training program or have the ability/commitment to obtain within six (6) months (IPS training referral by BestCare).

CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required or ability to obtain within 3 months.

Must maintain a valid Oregon Driver License or ability to obtain one upon hire and be insurable under the organization’s auto liability coverage policy.

Preferred

Priority will be given to applicants currently certified.

Lived experience with homelessness or related challenges is preferred but not required.

Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.

Salary: $18.00 - $23.62 per hour
