Overview
Assistant Director, Athletic Communications – St. John’s University. The role serves as the media relations specialist for assigned sports and provides communications support for all 17 St. John’s athletic programs. This position builds relationships with local and national media to increase coverage and exposure and executes a comprehensive messaging plan through news releases, game notes, previews, student-athlete and staff profiles, and content for the official athletics website, social media, and other digital platforms. Reports to the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations. Responsibilities
Directs communications strategy for assigned sports and assists with other sports when necessary. Produces press releases, game notes, media guides, and maintains statistical information. Coordinates interviews with local and national media outlets. Serves as a media relations expert for teams and coaches to maximize positive exposure opportunities. Updates news and features on the official athletics website and manages digital and social media platforms. Staffs home and selected away events and supervises game-day/statistical crews. Cultivates positive working relationships with coaches, administrators, and members of the media. Provides communications support to other divisions of the Athletic Department. Adheres to University branding guidelines. Supports on game-day operations and other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Relations. Maintains knowledge of NCAA and BIG EAST rules and University policies; ensures compliance and reports infractions as required. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or related field (preferred). 1–2 years of relevant full-time experience in collegiate or professional athletic communications or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in communications, marketing or related field (preferred). Experience with videography and video editing (additional eligibility). Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media platforms (e.g., Facebook/X/TikTok/Instagram). Photography experience preferred. Other Requirements
Travel is required (local and overnight). Standard hours generally Monday–Friday with additional night and weekend work as needed. Work environment includes professional office settings and athletic venues; ability to work at athletic events in proximity to competition and fans. Physical demands include standing, moving, and lifting equipment up to 10–20 lbs. Supervisory responsibility for graduate assistants and student workers in the athletic communications department.
