Job Title: Elementary Counselor Reports to: Principal Dept./School: Campus Assigned Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Pay Grade: Counselor Salary Schedule (Credentialing Stipend), 192 days Date Revised: 05/24/22 Primary Purpose: Under the direction of the Campus Principal and the Director of Social & Emotional Services, plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of guidance as outlined by The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling programs, including individual and group counseling; social service needs; and mental health and behavioral tiered intervention services. Provide a proactive, developmental guidance program to encourage all students to maximize personal growth and development. Qualifications: Education/Certification: A Master’s degree in guidance and counseling Valid Texas counseling certification Special Knowledge/Skills: Thorough knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior Experience: Three years teaching experience, preferred Major Responsibilities and Duties: Program Management/Guidance: Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs. Teach school developmental guidance curriculum to students. Help teachers incorporate guidance-related information into existing curriculum. Provide guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop educational plans and career awareness. Provide individual and group counseling/guidance to help students cope effectively with personal, social, academic, behavioral, and family concerns. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of guidance program and make changes based on findings. Develop and maintain an effective referral system. Develop a proactive plan to provide responsive services as needs arise. Plan and implement activities for school-wide awareness campaigns, such as Red Ribbon Week. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required. Mentor new counselors, as assigned. Assist with the transition of students to middle school. Consultation: Develop relationships with other guidance and counseling staff. Promote WFISD programs to students, parents, administrators, counselors, teachers, and the community. Recruit and collaborate with community agencies as a resource to meet student, parent, campus, and district needs. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance their work with students. Work with district and school personnel and community organizations to obtain resources for students. Use an effective recommendation/referral process to help students and others use special programs and services. Assessment: Participate in planning and evaluation of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program. Consult with other providers on assessment results and student needs after placements or evaluations (with proper approvals). Utilize student assessments, surveys, and other data sources to drive program development. Administration: Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in the guidance and counseling area. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents. Professional: Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment. Attend professional workshops and staff development opportunities. Attend district PLCs, department, and professional development meetings, as required. Maintain student confidentiality. Regular attendance. Other Duties as Assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise assigned counseling interns, when needed. Working Conditions: Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain control under stress. Frequent prolonged and irregular hours. Occasional districtwide travel.
