Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Safety Leadership
Ensure a safe working environment for all employees and visitors by enforcing company safety policies and procedures.
Initiative & Prioritization
Demonstrate self-starting initiative with the ability to identify and prioritize high-impact tasks across teams and projects.
Team Leadership & Development
Lead and mentor Laboratory Managers and quality control personnel. Foster collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement across business units.
Strategic Planning & Resource Coordination
Contribute to sub-regional strategic planning. Oversee capital expenditures (CapEx) to ensure quality control equipment and facilities meet operational needs. Optimize personnel and equipment deployment across teams.
Quality Improvement & Analysis
Drive ongoing quality enhancement through leadership, data analysis, training, and cross-functional collaboration. Evaluate product specifications to ensure material and finished product excellence.
Certifications & Compliance
Promote WAQTC certification for QC staff. Maintain compliance with nuclear material licensing regulations and environmental standards. Support development of environmental product declarations using the NAPA Eco-Label program.
Testing & Mix Design Oversight
Manage all aggregate and asphalt testing—lab and field—including gradations, oil content, volumetrics, densities, and core sampling. Lead asphalt mix design and implementation at production plants.
Documentation & Reporting
Oversee material certification submittals and maintain accurate records of test results and correspondence. Notify supervisors promptly of any deficiencies and provide technical guidance as needed.
Stakeholder Relations
Serve as liaison between the company and external testing labs, DOTs, municipalities, and independent agencies. Address customer quality concerns and maintain strong client relationships.
Software & Technical Tools
Utilize tools like Stonemont (including blending features), PRISM inventory software, and asphalt mix blend spreadsheets. Willingness to learn and apply new technologies is essential.
Cross-Functional Communication
Effectively communicate quality needs with business leaders, hot plant operators, and crusher operators. Collaborate with construction teams to align QC efforts with project requirements.
Evaluation & Recommendations
Analyze test results and provide written assessments for placed asphalt mixes that may not meet full specifications but still offer value. Develop procedures and training to support continuous improvement.
Field Engagement
Conduct regular site visits to aggregate pits, asphalt plants, and construction projects to monitor and promote quality production and placement.
Professional Development
Participate in continuing education as directed to stay current with industry standards and best practices.
Qualifications To succeed in this role, candidates must be capable of fulfilling all essential duties either independently or by effectively leading quality control teams across business units.
Education & Experience
Preferred: Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) with at least 2 years of experience in aggregate and asphalt quality control.
Equivalent experience in construction, aggregate, and asphalt quality control may substitute for the PE requirement.
Prior leadership experience in a technical or operational role is strongly preferred.
Work Requirements
Willingness to travel 20–40%, including overnight stays as needed.
Commitment to safety policies and procedures as outlined in the company manual.
Must be punctual, self-managed, and accountable for professional responsibilities.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, supporting peers and supervisors.
Flexibility to work nights and weekends when project demands require.
Knowledge & Skills
Strong foundation in asphalt mix design and blend adjustment techniques.
Familiarity with AASHTO Re:Source standards and certification processes.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Experience with industry tools such as Stonemont, PRISM, QC Money, and the Eco-Label tool.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
Additional Information Work Environment
Much of the time is spent in an office setting with sedentary conditions.
Will be exposed to dust, noise, heavy equipment, seasonal temperatures, and live traffic during field visits.
Ability to drive long distances as needed to visit projects, plants or material sites.
