Job Description
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Upward Bound programs, the Project Advisor is responsible for assisting with the administration, implementation and continuation of the U.S. Department of Education-funded Upward Bound Roanoke City/TRIO project.
The project is dedicated to preparing high school students in Roanoke City, Virginia, to pursue post‑secondary education. Upward Bound: Roanoke City serves students who meet income‑eligibility guidelines, are potential first‑generation college students, and/or who meet federal definitions of high‑risk of academic failure. The project serves 60 students at William Fleming and Patrick Henry high schools. This position is embedded at the high schools four days per week, and is on campus in Blacksburg one day per week. During the summer program, this position will be based on campus in Blacksburg.
Duties
Recruit, retain, and ensure participation of program participants in accordance with federal regulations and departmental guidelines.
Plan and coordinate the implementation of academic, social, and cultural programs for students and families.
Assist the TRIO Programs Director and Assistant Director with compiling materials for the Annual Performance Report for the U.S. Department of Education.
Report to Virginia Tech Outreach and International Affairs and coordinate tracking of former participants.
Maintain a caseload of participants, provide virtual and/or in‑person services, group workshops, and support to help students overcome barriers to post‑secondary education.
Transport students to program events such as on‑campus monthly tutorials, field trips, and college visits as needed.
Help participants select and identify post‑secondary options and complete tasks necessary for postsecondary enrollment, including financial aid forms and admissions applications.
Maintain confidential and complete records of student services, daily sessions, and annual summaries.
Submit travel reports and financial documentation in a timely manner.
Refer participants internally and externally to additional support services as necessary.
Meet with each participant at least once per month.
Plan, coordinate, and supervise summer program activities.
Develop psychoeducational strategies, interventions, and interactive activities for students.
Attend monthly tutorials during the academic year to chaperone, assist, and/or counsel participants.
Attend workshops and other staff training opportunities.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in education, social work, or related area.
Experience working with diverse groups of high school students.
Experience working for educational programs that address the needs of income‑eligible, potential first‑generation college, and academically at‑risk youth.
Excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with TRiO programs.
Former participant in a TRiO program.

Pay Band: N/A
Overtime Status: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime)
Appointment Type: Restricted
Salary: $52,000–$57,000, commensurate with experience
Hours per week: 40+
