Transportation Engineering Technician II - Survey Instrument Operator (61032320)

Job Responsibilities
Regularly operate specialized survey equipment including manual total station, data collector, and level to perform basic survey operations for establishing elevations of benchmarks, ground controls, profiles, and cross sections.
Proficiently operate level rod to determine elevations, and use prism poles to provide alignment and collect topography.
Use bush axe and saws to clear brush for line of sight and take measurements as needed.
Assist with and occasionally operate robotic total stations and advanced GPS equipment.
Maintain and record field notes, including profile, cross sections, and topography, and reduce level notes to check for elevation precision.
Assist with or oversee the operation, calibration, and maintenance of basic equipment and job safety, including placement and maintenance of signs.
Under a South Carolina registered land surveyor’s direction, perform courthouse and field research to locate property lines and corners, and assist in plotting property information.
Locate and obtain utility data in the field.
Maintain a personal daily work log and utilize ESS In SCEIS to enter work time with charge codes and leave requests, and use ESS to maintain personal information.
Assist with matters relating to highway design, including horizontal and vertical alignment.
Assist with the setting of ground panels and surveying to establish coordinates and elevations of panel points for photogrammetric topographic mapping.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and one and one-half (1.5) years of experience related to the area of employment, or an approved acceptable equivalence.
A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
Physical demands: frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, and lifting up to 50 lbs.; walking for extended periods; treading rough terrain; working in close proximity to motor traffic; working in natural environmental hazards; occasional exposure to noise; may require working outside normal work schedules and weekends.
