The STEP program is expanding. This role supports the screening, identification, and transfer of state DOC inmates housed in local jails to suitable re‑entry and rehabilitation programs. It involves collaborating with the Office of Adult Services, local sheriffs, jail wardens, and DPS&C program staff to ensure accurate offender identification and screening, prompt transfers, and successful enrollment in Re‑entry Programs.
Additionally, the position helps oversee STEP contractors, conduct program audits for effectiveness, and use tracking systems to maintain compliance.
Based at the Department of Corrections Headquarters in Baton Rouge, this role offers a front‑row seat to the transformative work being done to prepare incarcerated individuals for successful re‑entry through education and rehabilitation programs. You'll have the rare opportunity to visit state and local correctional facilities, conduct hands‑on audits, and see the direct impact of your work.

Job Duties
Research inmate records to determine eligibility for work release, minimum security programs, or furloughs from an institution with special treatment units, or to determine eligibility for work release and furloughs in response to recommendations from administrators of local facilities.
Screen new commitments to ensure compliance with statutory, legal, and department requirements; i.e. valid hard labor sentences, sex offender identification and tracking, multiple offender restrictions, victim notification, and eligibility for Re‑Entry programming.
Contact sheriffs, clerks of court, probation personnel (in and out of state), and judges to verify incomplete criminal history dispositions and secure pertinent information from state police rap sheets, pre‑sentence investigations, and other documents necessary to identify detainers, pending charges, or unresolved warrants for the person of identifying offenders ineligible for transfer.
Majority of the workload will be screening records for eligibility. Experience with databases is desirable.
Work for (support): Program Consultant‑SS which has oversight of the three STEP programs in the state.
Position‑Specific Details
Appointment Type:
JOB APPOINTMENT – a temporary job lasting up to four years; however, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.
Appointment may also be filled as a probational appointment if a non‑temporary position becomes available in the recruitment process.
If filled by probation, a permanent classified LA State employee, if selected, may be required to accept a probational appointment.
