The Humane Society of Northwest Montana (HSNWMT) is seeking a Shelter Operations Manager to oversee the daily operations of our Adoption Center and ensure the highest standards of animal care, facility management, and team leadership. The Shelter Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Adoption Center, including animal care, adoptions, intake, front desk services, volunteer engagement, and facility maintenance. This position ensures smooth and humane operations, compliance with safety and welfare standards, and effective supervision of staff and volunteers. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Shelter Operations Manager works closely with the senior leadership team to support strategic goals, enhance operational efficiency, and uphold HSNWMT’s mission of compassionate care. Key Responsibilities

Operations & Administration Oversee daily shelter operations, including animal care, adoptions, intake, and customer services. Manage inventory, purchasing, vendor relations, and supply logistics for animal care and cleaning. Maintain facility and equipment through scheduling, inspections, and coordination with contractors. Ensure compliance with OSHA, sanitation, and animal welfare regulations. Oversee the Shelter Medical Coordinator’s work in veterinary scheduling, recordkeeping, and supply management. Track and analyze data in PetPoint and other systems to monitor shelter population, animal outcomes, and capacity. Assist with budget planning and financial monitoring for operational areas. Animal Care & Welfare Ensure all animals receive proper nutrition, medical treatment, enrichment, and compassionate care. Supervise daily cleaning, feeding, disease prevention, and behavior monitoring. Coordinate animal transports and veterinary appointments. Participate in decision-making related to animal behavior, health, and adoptability. Facility & Safety Management Maintain a clean, safe, and well-functioning shelter, grounds, and vehicles. Enforce safety protocols, emergency response plans, and disaster preparedness procedures. Conduct facility inspections and safety audits regularly. Personnel & Volunteer Leadership Supervise animal care, front desk, and volunteer program staff. Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate team members; promote teamwork and accountability. Support the Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting and engaging volunteers. Foster a positive, mission-aligned work culture that values compassion, professionalism, and collaboration. Customer Service Model excellent customer service and maintain positive public relations. Handle sensitive or challenging situations with professionalism and empathy. Qualifications

Proven leadership and management experience, ideally in animal sheltering, veterinary, or nonprofit operations. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of animal care standards, facility maintenance, and safety compliance. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with staff, volunteers, and the public. Proficiency with shelter management software plus. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in varied environmental conditions. Willingness to work weekends and holidays as part of a 365-day operation. Work Environment

This role involves working around animals, cleaning agents, and occasional exposure to zoonotic diseases or aggressive animals. The position requires physical stamina, attention to safety, and a calm, compassionate demeanor under pressure. Why Join Us
