Mansueto Circulation Services Assistant
– Library C & A - Access Serv - Coll Mgmt & Circ - Mansueto Job Summary Under the direction of the Circulation Supervisor on duty, this position is responsible for all patron service and circulation functions of the Mansueto library during their shift. This role handles questions, requests, and concerns from library patrons at the circulation desk. It also performs daily storage and retrieval tasks using the automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) and conducts regular troubleshooting of the system and related software/workstations. The position may provide backup supervision of counter attendants and the Reading Room in the absence of the Circulation Supervisor and is responsible for aspects of inventory projects including accessioning new materials and off-site storage removals. Opening/closing routines are performed as needed. Responsibilities Perform all circulation desk duties: check in/out items, assist with access and requests (including ILL Building Use Only), media, and other non-standard circulating materials. Process items through the Automated Storage and Retrieval System and troubleshoot basic mechanical and software issues. Remove materials from Mansueto inventory slated for off-site storage; assist with processing and transporting materials for regular shipments. Assist with training and supervising student circulation assistants. In the absence of a Circulation Supervisor, guide student staff in maintaining circulation policies, procedures, and service standards; oversee department functions and Reading Room policies. Open or close the building; handle general inquiries related to building and security; provide initial response to emergencies. Perform other related duties as needed. Competencies Ability to collaborate within a diverse team and work with a high level of independence. Experience serving patrons and enforcing library policies with clarity, consistency, patience, and empathy. Strong problem identification, assessment, and referral skills with sound judgment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Education, Experience, or Certifications Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred. Experience: Significant customer service experience required; library experience preferred. Technical: Proficiency with MS Office, email, and internet applications; willingness to operate and troubleshoot heavy machinery. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Scheduled hours: 4:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m., Wednesday through Sunday, with flexibility for changes to library hours or staffing needs. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, perform repetitive hand/wrist movements, and kneel, bend, or crouch as needed. Must be able to lift/carry up to 49 lbs and push/pull up to 99 lbs. Involves safe operation of heavy machinery and equipment; adequate hearing and vision for task performance.
