Job Summary As part of a collaborative team of public servants, an investigator protects residents’ health and safety by conducting on‑site inspections and investigations in Texas long‑term care facilities (nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and day‑activities and health services sites) to assess compliance with state and federal laws and rules. The position offers a competitive starting salary, excellent state benefits, and the opportunity to travel frequently across the state.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
Conduct on‑site licensure inspections, complaint and incident investigations, and annual comprehensive surveys in facilities.
Complete inspection or survey reports detailing deficiencies and remedies.
Communicate clearly and accurately with internal and external stakeholders.
Conduct exit conferences with facility staff regarding findings.
Visit facilities to verify correction of previously cited regulatory violations.
Perform quality assurance reviews of documents prepared by others.
Occasionally testify at hearings or in court proceedings.
Assist with non‑skilled care and oversight during emergency licensure action; skill level may vary by qualifications.
Be available for on‑call duties for emergencies such as weather events or high‑priority situations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of professional patient‑care standards.
Skilled in conducting investigations to verify compliance.
Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
Ability to multi‑task and track multiple activities with competing priorities.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to use the computer for writing reports.
Ability to exercise professional judgment and reach sound decisions.
Ability to integrate complex regulatory concepts, procedures, and processes.
Ability to operate personal computers and software.
Licensure, Registration, or Certification Requirements
Must have Surveyor Minimum Qualifications Test (SMQT) Certification or obtain it within 12 months of hire.
Current license or registration as a nurse, social worker, respiratory therapist, or dietician preferred.
Education and Initial Screening Criteria
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university. Experience may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis up to four years.
Preferred Experience
Experience in regulatory services.
Experience writing detailed reports.
Experience operating personal computers and software.
Experience conducting investigations preferred.
Additional Information
Experience conducting investigations preferred.
Flexibility in work hours is required; the job requires up to 80% travel, including statewide travel, overnight, and weekend travel.
On‑call duties for emergencies or high‑priority situations may be required.
Must have reliable transportation.
Position can work a compressed workweek of four 10‑hour days.
