Job Summary
The Special Education Coordinator will develop and support district wide systems that empower all staff to transform culture, climate, and instructional practices, so that all learners have equity of voices, resources, opportunities and expectations across the District.
In conjunction with the supervisor of special education , the coordinator will provide opportunities of support to special education staff, general education staff, paraprofessionals, related service providers and administrators across the continuum of services. The purpose of this job is to assist with the facilitation of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act compliance by providing leadership in developing, achieving, and maintaining the best possible educational programs and services in the assigned discipline(s).
Responsibilities include
consultation
within educational programs regarding proactive supports, assessments,
assisting instructional personnel
in the development of comprehensive program plans, and
supporting newly hired teachers . The coordinator will assist in the development of individualized goals and
participate in IEP meetings.
The coordinator collaborates
with District and school personnel to design and implement professional learning opportunities/trainings.
Qualifications
Master's Degree in Education related field from an accredited institution required. Valid Tennessee Teacher Certification (special education certification preferred/ 5yrs working with special education population) TN Administrator and Evaluator licensure (preferred) Commitment to the belief that all students can learn and to the mission of educational equity. Capacity to define a vision, build teams and achieve results despite tremendous obstacles. Experience in strategic planning, leadership techniques, and coordination of people and resources. Training and experience working with students who exhibit challenging behaviors, which interfere with their learning or the learning of others.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
Recommend program modifications/accommodations based on ongoing data collection for the purpose of the supervision and instruction of students. Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) team meetings, act as a liaison and provide input and recommendations to the IEP team related to special education services. Assure that structures and resources are in place to support student success in the areas of academic, behavior, attendance, and health/mental health. Facilitate and/or attend staff meetings, clinics, student progress meetings, and team meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving skills and knowledge Ability to lead the building staff to achieve and sustain high levels of student learning and growth. Observes teachers' classroom management, instructional practice, professional development pursuits, interpersonal and leadership skills, while identifying high- and low-effectiveness performers, and provide clear and actionable feedback, resources and support. Helps develop policies and organizational procedures to: Implement the instructional program. *Provide harmonious staff relations; *Secure a safe physical environment for pupils and staff*Secure wholesome school-community organizations which work within the school.
Student Success
Provide supervision regarding student performance, progress, and behavior for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of student progress and/or implementing student's IEP objectives. Work collaboratively with District and school leadership to develop and align student transition plans and support to ensure successful student transitions. Implement multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) focused on the development of structures, processes, and measures for academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth of all students.
Training Expectations
Provide supervision, modeling, coaching, and shadowing to experienced assistants for the purpose of providing resources and training in implementing Intensive Behavior Interventions programs. Supervise/facilitate social skills training programs for the purpose of assisting students in training for peer interactions, participation in inclusive settings, behavior management, taking care of personal needs, and applying strategies for self-advocacy. Coach and support building-level administration, faculty and staff with support planning and efforts. Collaborate with community organizations, agencies and individuals to advance both District and school efforts in relation to behavior, attendance, and health/mental health support. Recommend to teachers, support staff, parents, and other ROBCO personnel appropriate strategies for positive behavior interventions for individuals and assist in resolving the unique behavior and/or disciplinary concerns of such students. Assist with other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
Experience and skills in leadership, assessment, and evaluation. Knowledge in current educational research relative to multi-tiered behavioral frameworks and multi-tiered systems of support (specifically behavior). Experience planning and conducting professional learning. Experience in databased decision-making. Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills (planning, implementing, evaluation, and budget). Applies the principles of continuous improvementwithquality tools and processes. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills with individuals, teams, and groups (teachers, parents, administrators and support staff), ability to work with groups of diverse populations. Competency working in a culturally diverse environment or the willingness to acquire these skills. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the special needs and requirements of children, parents, and staff in one-to-one and group situations Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students Supervise one-on-one applied behavior analysis including discrete trial training to designated students in variety of settings Observe and manage behavior of students according to approved procedures Attend work on a prompt and regular basis. Maintain confidentiality. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees. Ability to effectively manage student crisis that is approved by the regulatory systems of the District, IDEA, and the state of Tennessee Ability to elevate professional contributions through ongoing reflection, building upon previous learning and being open and receptive to ongoing feedback. Provide instructional and technical intervention guidance for all special education teachers Maintain accurate knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, policies and procedures regarding special education including but not limited to: IDEA, ADA, and ESSA Communicate and collaborate with coordinators, school staff, parents, and outside agencies Provide and /or facilitate professional development opportunities for school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, and pre-school teachers Maintain a current and working knowledge of special education continuum of services and policies regarding placements in the 3 thru 22 age group Evaluate and implement specific curriculum and instructional methodologies for specialized programs Monitors inventory of department equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities Attends various meetings, serves on committees, and makes speeches or presentations as needed Complete system-wide tasks as assigned
