Overview The General Mechanic/Service Shop Technician is responsible for setting up, repairing, servicing, diagnosing, performing preventive maintenance, and installing replacement parts on Caterpillar diesel‑powered construction equipment. The position is a skilled technician role that works largely independently or with guidance from service mentors. The technician reports to a Service Shop Manager and serves customers located in company service shops.

Basic Requirements

Diesel engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred. High school diploma or equivalent required.

Two or more years of hands‑on equipment and/or engine experience, diagnostics and troubleshooting experience working diesel‑powered construction equipment or truck engines.

Able to work standard five‑day work schedules, including daily overtime, and occasional weekend hours as required.

Must possess a complete set of basic mechanical hand tools, including drives, sockets, and wrenches.

Must demonstrate professionalism, integrity, adaptability, and a strong customer service focus.

Demonstrates a sense of urgency and self‑initiative, and the personal drive to be successful.

Excellent communication skills.

Demonstrate technical knowledge of construction equipment and/or engine mechanical failures.

Demonstrated analytical problem‑solving skills.

Possess and maintain a current, valid state driver’s license. CDL may be required for some field positions.

Responsibilities

Read and interpret technical instruction, service and safety manuals, and company policies and procedures.

Work with mechanical, hydraulic, and electric/electronic schematics and wiring diagrams; demonstrate proficiency in the use of test equipment.

Perform high‑quality repair service on equipment and engines, responding to customer needs in a positive, safe, and timely manner, ensuring maximum value for work performed.

Follow all company and customer safety rules, maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work area, and fully participate in accident prevention and safety improvement activities.

Wear required personal protective equipment, including protective glasses, gloves, clothing, and footwear as required by the job.

Respond to all customer requests in a professional, courteous, timely, and responsive manner; maintain a clean, professional personal appearance at all times.

Assist management and colleagues by keeping the manager continually apprised of customer questions and problems when necessary.

Demonstrate honesty, integrity, respect, and a positive attitude; maintain ownership of assigned tasks and adhere to all company policies and procedures.

Work independently or as part of a team, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and meet all eligibility requirements to drive company vehicles when necessary.

Occasionally lift up to 50‑80 pounds and perform other physical tasks required for the position.
