General Description The “Steel Erection Foreman/leadman” provides site leadership and is responsible for scheduling, manpower and equipment planning, coordinating, supervising, cost control, safety, training, and productivity of crews installing steel components.
Reporting This position reports directly to the Steel Erection Superintendent and the Project Manager for project related issues.
Responsibilities
Read specifications and blueprints to determine locations, quantities, and sizes of materials required.
Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural‑steel members using plumb bobs, lasers, transits, and levels.
Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts following blueprints.
Hoist steel members into place using cranes or other equipment with proper signaling.
Bolt aligned structural‑steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding.
Field assemble parts such as steel frames, columns, beams, and girders per blueprints.
Push, pull, or pry structural‑steel members into approximate positions for final attachment.
Cut, bend, and weld steel pieces using metal shears, torches, and welding equipment.
Safely operate and maintain equipment (personnel and material lifts) and small tools (welding machines, torch sets, saws, grinders, hoists, etc.).
Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in steel construction.
Knowledge of safety, quality, and cost control standards and procedures.
Understanding of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Knowledge of proper rigging and signaling.
Speak and understand English in oral and written form.
Assess job priorities and assign employees to appropriate job sites.
Ensure employees have tools and equipment needed for job output.
Oversee work and ensure it runs smoothly and as per plan.
Ensure safety precautions are followed and update safety kits for emergencies.
Communicate with supervisor regarding crew performance.
Assist in training new employees.
Provide clear directions to avoid repetitive mistakes.
Enforce company rules on crew.
Complete jobs on time and within budget.
Evaluate efficient ways to complete job without sacrificing quality.
Hold documented site safety meeting weekly.
Complete a 3‑week look‑ahead schedule weekly.
Attend on‑site project meetings (safety, quality, scheduling, production).
Issue corrective action notices as required to enforce company and project guidelines.
Perform quality control inspections listed in the QC Inspector job description.
Tools And Technology Requirements
Bolt bag, spud wrench, bull pins, weld hood (applicable to welders), tape measure, plumb bob, cheater bar, pliers, clamps, hammers, Bessie clamps, vise grips.
Transit, laser lever, torpedo, torque guns, welders, gas, supplied equipment, rigging and components.
Travel And Work Hours The foreman must maintain a valid driver's license, as traveling to various projects is part of responsibilities. Short day travel is typical, but some jobs may require staying out of town. Normal work week is 40 hours; overtime, Saturdays and Sundays may be required to meet project schedule.
Salary / Wages Salary will be commensurate with the job description, tasks, abilities, skills, performance.
