Responsibilities
Instructs middle school athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for success in the program.
Understands and abides by all building, Tacoma School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.
Supervises student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
Plans, develops and implements an effective sport program; prepares athletes physically and mentally to participate with confidence; formulates behavioral objectives; administers discipline fairly; emphasizes safety; provides opportunities for success; shares information with parents about rules, schedule and practice times; informs participants about district policies and extracurricular contracts.
Organizes practice sessions, conducts practices for 7th and 8th grade teams four days a week and 6th grade teams two days a week after school; teaches basic fundamental skills; prepares daily practice activities; maintains records; emphasizes good sportsmanship.
Coordinates facility use with the building athletic director; follows budgeting and equipment purchasing procedures; handles injuries per district procedures; maintains injury records with the athletic director.
Informs students and parents of eligibility procedures and sport-specific rules; posts rules to participants.
Manages equipment issuance, records, and returns; conducts weekly safety checks; holds students responsible for lost equipment; completes inventories and reports to the athletic director.
Provides recommendations to the building athletic director regarding program, facilities, and transportation; assists in achieving program objectives.
Other Job Duties
Attends district and building athletic meetings as required.
Maintains knowledge by attending clinics and staying current with rule changes as adopted by WIAA and Tacoma School District.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Conditions Work with students in outdoor playing fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool or other sports facilities; physical ability to lift and move equipment; may be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Graduation from high school or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience as an assistant coach; must be at least 21 years of age (WIAA Regulation) or any combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work and that meets federal and state requirements.
Allowable Substitution: Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by the Human Resources department for comparability.
Licenses/Special Requirements First Aid Certificate and CPR card are required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of building, Tacoma School District, and WIAA policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.
Knowledge of effective coaching practices/techniques for the particular sport.
Ability to comply with WIAA coaching standards.
Ability to motivate students and exercise fairness in dealing with student athletes.
Ability to conduct oneself ethically and with poise and composure during practice and games.
Ability to relate to students of differing athletic abilities and to work in a multi-cultural, diverse setting.
Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate athletic activities; establish and maintain accurate records and files.
