A high-growth global fintech has engaged Alexander Barnes to appoint a US AML / Financial Crime Investigation Expert.
This role strengthens this fintech’s Financial Crime team in the United States - ensuring regulatory precision under BSA / FinCEN while enabling commercial speed.
A subject-matter expert and investigator in one. Someone who can shape frameworks and dive deep into complex cases when it matters.
Your contribution will support compliance, operations, and product - translating regulation into practical, data-driven action.
Key responsibilities
Act as the US AML / FinCrime SME, guiding outsourced teams on transaction monitoring case reviews (AML and fraud), SAR preparation, and quality control.
Lead or support complex investigations across multiple entities, high-risk typologies, or cross-border cases.
Identify new suspicious activity patterns and enhance monitoring logic, risk scoring, and typology coverage.
Oversee PEP and sanctions screening (OFAC, EU, UN) with consistent escalation standards and documentation.
Translate US regulatory requirements (BSA, FinCEN) into practical controls, documentation, and training.
Partner with Product, MLROs/BSA Officers, and Compliance to embed AML / FinCrime controls into new products, including crypto and investment offerings.
Maintain and update operational routines, playbooks, and training materials to keep controls current and effective.
Deliver training and knowledge sessions on emerging risks, typologies, and product-specific threats.
Support ongoing system testing and tuning for transaction monitoring and screening tools.
Skills and experience
5+ years in AML / FinCrime investigations or SME roles within fintech or payments.
Strong understanding of BSA / FinCEN guidance, SAR processes, and BSA Officer / MLRO responsibilities.
Proven experience with PEP and sanctions frameworks (OFAC, EDD, escalation handling).
CAMS or ICA certification strongly preferred.
Exposure to crypto, investment, gambling, or other high-risk industries is a strong advantage.
Analytical and investigative mindset - able to move between strategy and execution.
OSINT skills and ability to analyse large datasets; SQL is a plus.
Experience maintaining and improving AML / FinCrime processes, documentation, and tools.
Operates with ownership, urgency, and precision.
