Primary Function Operate as an Advanced Crane Operator with a variety of overhead cab, pendant‑controlled, and radio‑controlled cranes where the work requires a diverse knowledge of rigging, precision movements, and special care to protect critical machined surfaces and edges. Select and attach rigging to safely lift, lower, turn and position tooling, machines, oddly shaped products, equipment and large materials and components according to established practices.
Tools And Equipment Overhead cab, pendant‑controlled, and radio‑controlled cranes, electromagnets, weigh scales, slings, cables, chains, eye bolts, turnbuckles, clamps, hooks, shackles, plate shoes, spreaders, ladders, wrenches, hammer, grease gun, rollers, blocks, padding, safety glasses, gloves, etc.
Material Rough, semi‑finished and finished machined parts, castings, fabrications, forgings, rotors, spindles, gears, fixtures, machines and equipment, etc.
Direction Of Others Direct operators, machinists, assemblers, and others assisting in properly attaching the rigging and positioning of material.
Working Procedure
Receive work assignments from supervision and specific requests from shop personnel. Read and follow safety regulations, hand signals and work rules such as Northrop Grumman Safety Rules for the Safe Transportation Loads by Cranes, "Safe Work Load Table" and "Safe Loads for Cables and Slings." Determine weight of load and select from a diverse variety, the proper rigging to protect and precisely lift, lower, transport, place, turn and position various loads, assuring safety of the load, personnel and equipment. Work normally requires precision movements and special care because of the size, weight and configuration of the component and the need to protect critical machined surfaces (oil and steam tight) and edges. Analyze any special handling problems, Operate crane and/or assist other crane operations by observing and reading hand signals of others, as applicable, and by directing and doing crane operations to properly lift, lower, transport, turn, locate and position various apparatus and equipment, assuring the safety of the load, personnel and equipment.
Maintain tools, equipment and work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition. Maintain preventive maintenance records and report all unsafe conditions to supervision. Check rigging and handling equipment for defects before use and according to schedule.
Maintain in effect certifications for slinging and operating cranes by taking and passing periodic written and operational tests.
Maintain below the hook documentation as required including critical lift documentation as necessary for a variety of pre‑determined large or critical lifts.
Secure loads for transfer within the plant using chains, binders, etc.
Secure transportation skids for a variety of critical parts, gears, caps, straps, etc.
Support crane needs for machinists / mechanics during their installation of mandrels, fixtures, and miscellaneous tooling.
Perform mandatory daily crane inspections and document accordingly.
Perform work of equal or lower level as required.
Union Represented Position This position is represented by a union.
Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
Minimum 5 years’ experience operating jib, gantry, boom and bridge cranes with experience of basic rigging using straps, wire rope, shackles, bridles and chain falls.
Basic crane certification from an accredited crane licensing agency.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum 7 years’ experience operating cranes and experience with crane rigging which includes lifting fixtures, chain falls, straps, wire rope shackles, bridles, double block lifts and flipping of large raw material and finished parts.
Experience operating a crane and determining weight, center of gravity of materials to determine proper rigging or lifting devices needed to safely perform the lift.
Advanced crane and rigging certification from an accredited crane licensing agency.
