The Metrology Technician 3 will interpret complex drawings based on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles, create the Dimensional Measurement Plan (DMP), develop and optimize Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) programs, and collect dimensional data. While prioritizing tasks in a manufacturing environment, the candidate will analyze data, resolve measurement discrepancies, and generate reports. The candidate will serve as a technical expert, direct junior technicians, and lead training initiatives. Additionally, the Metrology Technician 3 will own the scheduling system, drive adherence to industry standards and best practices, oversee continuous process improvement, interface with outside vendors, and prioritize budgetary spending. The ideal candidate will enjoy hands-on work in a dynamic setting and have previous automotive industry experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interpret complex drawings based on GD&T principles
Create the Dimensional Measurement Plan following SOP
Determine appropriate measurement tool for different parts
Manage ballooning of technical drawings and ensure consistent formatting
Collect measurements with hand-held gauges
Develop / optimize CMM programs
Setup holding fixtures and part being measured
Utilize CMM software such as Calypso, Wenzel, and Hexagon
Employ 3D scanning technologies like ATOS GOM
Analyze measurement data, identify discrepancies, apply problem solving techniques, and implement resolution
Generate comprehensive dimensional reports, including alignment checks, inspection results, and recommendations for drawing updates or design adjustments
Collaborate with design engineering and quality teams to develop and optimize gauges/fixtures for efficient part inspection
Manage the scheduling system to prioritize tasks
Identify root causes of dimensional deviations, organize cross-functional teams to define and implement effective corrective actions
Engage with suppliers to identify sources of inspection variation to ensure accurate and repeatable dimensional data
Lead MSA studies to ensure compliance across measurement equipment, identify sources of measurement variation, and recommend optimization strategies
Provide support to junior technicians
Additional Duties
Stay current with industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices
Perform routine maintenance on measurement equipment
Identify opportunities for process improvement, cost reduction, increased throughput, and enhanced measurement accuracy
Develop and optimize work instruction and related documentation
Perform other related duties as assigned to support metrology and production functions
Qualifications EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED required
College or technical degree related to science or engineering (preferred)
10+ years experience in Metrology, dimensional analysis, and calibration
Proficient with hand-held gauges and advanced measurement tools including CMMs, 3D scanners, and related software (e.g., Calypso, Wenzel, Hexagon, ATOS GOM)
Advanced knowledge of GD&T principles and MSA techniques
Excellent organization and attention to detail
Effective oral and written communication skills
Previous experience in a laboratory
Automotive experience in production environment (preferred)
