Position Summary Anticipated Appointment Begin Date: October 15, 2025. This full-time, on-campus position reports to the Collection Development Librarian and coordinates closely with cataloging and other library staff. It is a Library Technician 3 role focused on purchasing physical and online information resources and facilitating access through copy cataloging and other access methods.
Position Description The Acquisitions and Resource Access Specialist is responsible for purchasing library materials (books, journals, electronic resources, videos, and other formats) and ensuring access to these resources. Responsibilities include print and electronic resource access, copy cataloging, and activating access to electronic resources. The role works with the Cataloging and Open Access Specialist on day-to-day technical services operations.
This position performs specialized technical and administrative duties requiring non-routine decision-making, advanced technical service expertise, and a library-wide perspective on procedures and services.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree plus two years of current (within 5 years) library experience; OR four years of current library experience; AND advanced proficiency in library applications (ILS, databases, institutional repository, content management systems).
Some positions may require in-depth knowledge of specialty areas (e.g., original or complex copy cataloging, serials management, interlibrary loan, government documents, image resources, music).
Preferred
Experience with ABLE bindery software or similar.
Essential Functions The following examples illustrate the general range of work and are not all-inclusive:
Acquisitions (35%)
Facilitates the purchase of library materials (books, films, electronic resources, other formats).
Monitors and renews print periodicals and electronic resources; manages invoices within budget.
Resolves ordering, receiving, and processing issues (claims, replacements).
Tracks fund balances, generates financial reports, and performs fiscal close duties in the ILS.
Configures and maintains acquisitions-related instances and integrations in the ILS/Vendor systems.
Cataloging and Electronic Resource Access (35%)
Performs MARC copy cataloging aligned with RDA and ISBD for physical items.
Catalogs using OCLC Connexion and Orbis Cascade; applies LC or Dewey classifications.
Compiles cataloging data for statistics; coordinates with others on serials and access to electronic resources.
Updates electronic resources (databases, ejournals, eBooks) in ILS and LibGuides; activates eBook purchases and tests access.
Statistics, Administration and Management (20%)
Collects usage statistics for electronic resources; collects data on databases, ejournals, eBooks, and streaming services.
Performs data collection and reporting for acquisitions; creates annual valuation reports; participates in Budget Committee meetings.
Attends library and university meetings; prepares documentation and training materials; supports other library areas as needed.
Binding and Receiving Donations (10%)
Prepares serials and monographs for binding; coordinates with students and ABLE database entries; supports donation processing.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Excellent communication and customer service; ability to handle sensitive situations professionally.
Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures; work under deadline pressure in a dynamic environment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; attention to detail and high productivity.
Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, and calendar/email tools; ability to learn university systems quickly.
Ability to train student assistants and work collaboratively in a diverse environment.
Physical Demands
Normal office activities; ability to move/transport up to 35 pounds.
Special Conditions
Occasional travel and off-site training; variable hours, potential for emergency calls.
Pre-employment background check required.
Non-exempt status with FLSA overtime provisions.
