North East Trees (NET) is a community-based, non-profit organization that helps heal environmental injustice through urban forestry, nature-based design-build, habitat restoration, and workforce development. Our work in underinvested communities in Los Angeles County helps to build climate resiliency through stewardship, planting, design, and community engagement.
Position: Community Engagement Coordinator
Reports To: Director of Design & Construction or Director of Urban Forestry
Supervises: Interns, Fellows, Volunteers
Status: Full Time, Hourly, Nonexempt
Work Location: Hybrid
Hourly Salary Range: $26.00 - $30.00
Position Overview The Community Engagement Coordinator leads outreach efforts that connect communities with NET’s mission and projects. This role builds relationships, fosters participation, and gathers valuable community input to guide ongoing and future initiatives. The Community Engagement Coordinator is a connector, communicator, and advocate who can inspire action and help grow our impact. The ideal candidate is an experienced community builder who can design and lead culturally relevant engagement strategies, represent NET in diverse settings, and elevate our visibility across the region.
Responsibilities Community Engagement & Outreach
Builds and sustains relationships with community members, partners, and stakeholders directly impacted by NET’s work
Serves as a community liaison by attending meetings, volunteer events, fundraisers, Park Advisory Boards, and Neighborhood Councils
Keeps stakeholders informed of project status and ensures feedback loops with NET staff
Creates and manages multilingual outreach materials (English/Spanish required).
Plans, executes, evaluates, and reports on community events, workshops, and volunteer activities
Develops and implements comprehensive outreach and engagement plans to strengthen community trust and advance NET’s mission
Supervise interns, fellows, and volunteers supporting engagement activities
Collaborates across departments to ensure programs reflect community priorities
Supports staff and crew recruitment from local communities
Builds coalitions and partnerships that expand NET’s reach and impact
Communication & Visibility
Represents NET to elected officials, neighborhood councils, and partner organizations
Identifies opportunities for future collaborations and fundraising partnerships
Strengthens NET’s brand presence across digital, social, and in-person platforms
Develops and distributes marketing and communication content, including social media, email campaigns, and outreach collateral
Supports storytelling that uplifts community voices and NET’s impact
Evaluation & Reporting
Tracks and analyzes engagement metrics from events, social media, and outreach campaigns
Uses data to evaluate the effectiveness of and refine engagement strategies
Reports outcomes and insights to staff, partners, and funders
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Skills/ Requirements
Deep passion for environmental justice, climate resilience, and serving underinvested communities
Strong familiarity with the cultural, political, environmental, and social landscape of Northeast, East, or South Los Angeles (residency preferred)
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or a minimum of 2 years’ experience in community outreach, volunteer engagement, or nonprofit/community work
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities using equity, inclusion, justice and cultural humility practices
Proven skills in community engagement, public speaking, facilitation and event coordination
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with strong facilitation and conflict-resolution abilities
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and communication platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Mailchimp, Squarespace); willingness to learn new tools
Experience developing communications, marketing materials, and managing social media platforms
Highly organized, proactive, and results-focused, with leadership and project management experience
Education and Experience
A relevant undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university.
Strong work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Minimum two years of proven success in a Community Engagement or a similar role.
English/Spanish bilingual proficiency is a plus
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds assisted, and up to 50 pounds assisted (e.g., setting up tabling or event materials)
