Position Summary This individual will assist the OSP Manager with all aspects related to maintaining the existing infrastructure and designing and engineering new OSP systems, including cellular systems, campus security camera systems, and emergency call stations. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, documenting, and repairing copper, fiber, and cellular infrastructure. The individual will also serve as the primary backup to the IT manager position as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the OSP IT Manager with the design and engineering of projects involving OSP infrastructure.
Examine and provide input on OSP infrastructure plans developed by outside designers, contractors, and engineers.
Assist in generating estimates or working with contractors to produce estimates for OSP projects and proposals.
Write technical specifications for OSP installation projects to be included in scopes of works and/or bid documents.
Supervise, coordinate, oversee, inspect, and approve work performed on UGA OSP infrastructure, including work by UGA and non‑UGA installers.
Inspect final installations, produce punch lists, and ensure all deficiencies are addressed before project sign‑off.
Oversee OSP projects, ensuring installers follow industry, state, university, and local regulations and best practices.
Obtain and verify as‑built and test documentation upon job completion, guaranteeing all work meets or exceeds specifications.
Create as‑built maps and related information.
Assist with OSP infrastructure installation and problem determination related to the campus security camera and campus emergency call station programs.
Ensure tasks are performed timely and correctly; audit results for accuracy.
Provide staff with training, tools, and equipment needed to perform tasks.
Maintain a priority list for standard troubleshooting and non‑critical repair locations.
Work closely with telephone services and EITS telephone technicians to identify emerging problem areas and determine their priority.
Provide direction and support to the technician designated as the EDEN (Georgia 811) contact for telecommunications infrastructure.
Respond to locate requests as required by Georgia locate law and audit locate work for accuracy and care.
Assist in coordinating emergency OSP telecommunication system repairs, including identifying issues, contacting contractors, supervising work, verifying restoration, notifying customers, and providing updates.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications Detailed knowledge of UGA Outside Plant desired but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Ability to install, design, troubleshoot, and repair outside plant components (fiber, copper, conduit, maintenance holes, etc.).
Ability to terminate, fuse splice, and test outside plant loose tube, tight buffer, and ribbon optical fiber.
Ability to read OSP documentation and calculate loss budgets for fiber link certifications.
Competent user of Fluke Networks VersiV Fiber Pro and OTDR.
Experience locating outside telecommunications infrastructure and using Dynatel 3M 2500 series utility locator and Georgia 811 Eden portal.
Physical Demands Lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, operate power tools, work in small spaces (crawlspaces, attics, maintenance holes).
Other Requirements
Driving responsibility required.
Position of trust.
Security access required.
Non‑financial role; no P‑Card or direct financial interaction.
