Overview
The Fifth Judicial District Court in Eddy County, Carlsbad, New Mexico has one full-time, at-will Bailiff (U) position (#10100063). This unarmed role reports to a Judge and provides courtroom security and customer service during proceedings. Opening Date: 10-09-2025 Close Date: 10-22-2025 Target Pay Range/Rate: $15.000-$20.413 per hour Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Awards/Notes: This position is in Range BB. The Bailiff assists Judges, Jurors, and other parties during courtroom proceedings and provides customer service. Set up and manage the courtroom during proceedings; maintain decorum and supervise participants. Coordinate with law enforcement on inmate transportation to and from the courthouse. Work with attorneys to accommodate special equipment needs for hearings. Maintain, secure, and manage exhibits entered as evidence; prepare and organize case documents as needed. Obtain files and Judge’s notes for upcoming cases; assemble files in hearing order; ensure updated materials are available for the Judge. Assist in juror processes, maintain juror time records, take roll, and seat jurors appropriately. Ensure all parties are present for hearings and swear in witnesses or proper parties as needed. Enter dispositions into the case management system and prepare orders for the Judge’s signature. Perform Court Monitor duties and act as a liaison with local law enforcement. Train and support other bailiffs and assist in document flow between Judge, attorneys, and pro se parties. Announce Judge’s entrance/exit and maintain courtroom decorum during proceedings. Other duties as assigned. Competencies/Qualifications
The successful applicant should demonstrate knowledge of general court procedures, security management and safety practices, evacuation procedures, fire alarm systems, metal detectors and security equipment, and judiciary and courtroom protocols. This includes familiarity with electronic equipment and first aid techniques, including CPR/AED, and relevant reporting procedures. Work Environment and Physical Demands
Work is performed in an office or court setting. A valid driver’s license and travel may be required. The schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: High school diploma or GED (no substitution). Experience: One (1) year of experience in security, law enforcement, or a legal setting. Experience Substitution: 30 semester hours of college can substitute for one year of experience. Other: Selected candidates will receive security training specific to the court, including operation of security and metal detecting equipment and basic first aid (CPR/AED). To Apply
