Applied Acoustics Post Bachelors Student

role at

Los Alamos National Laboratory .

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Applied Acoustics Team (MPA-11) is seeking a motivated post‑bachelors student with strong experimental and data analysis skills to contribute to the development of new acoustic characterization systems across industrial and non‑proliferation application spaces.

What You Will Do This position involves complex experimental work, significant data analysis, and signal processing. Key responsibilities include:

Designing and executing experimental studies in applied acoustics.

Analyzing experimental data using advanced signal processing techniques.

Developing and validating new acoustic characterization technologies.

Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on research for material characterization, acoustic imaging, nonlinear acoustics, and acoustic separation of two‑phase systems.

Presenting results to sponsors and at conferences, and contributing to publications and patents.

What You Need Minimum job requirements:

B.S. in Applied Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field, earned within the last five years or soon to be completed.

Strong technical background in signal processing, data analysis, finite element analysis (especially COMSOL), ultrasonic techniques, nondestructive testing, machine learning, or time‑reversal acoustics.

Fluency in one or more programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, Visual Basic, C++, LabVIEW).

Hands‑on experience:

Demonstrated experience conducting original scientific research with a peer‑reviewed publication record.

Experience with complex experimental design and execution, and associated data analysis.

Knowledge of electronics and typical laboratory test instruments (function generators, oscilloscopes, piezoelectric transducers, DAQs, microphones, hydrophones).

Experience in ultrasonic flaw detection, acoustic imaging, or acoustic characterization of materials.

Experience with acoustic resonance techniques (e.g., ARS, RUS).

CAD software proficiency.

Desired qualifications include:

Flexibility to adapt to new requirements and willingness to learn new areas of research.

Ability to obtain DOE Q clearance (usually requires U.S. citizenship).

Work Location The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM.

Benefits

PPO or High Deductible medical insurance.

Dental and vision insurance.

Free basic life and disability insurance.

Paid childbirth and parental leave.

401(k) with 6% match and 3.5% annual contribution.

Learning opportunities and tuition assistance.

Flexible schedules and paid time off.

Onsite gyms and wellness programs.

Extensive relocation package for outside a 50‑mile radius.
