Base pay range: $73,939.00/yr - $137,000.00/yr.

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). The EDRP provides up to $200,000 over a period of one to five years for eligible applicants who meet specific individual requirements and submit their application within four months of appointment.

Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens under VA policy.

Education: Hold a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA‑accredited program (PCSAS) or CPA‑accredited program, or a Canadian Psychological Association program, at the time of completion.

The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.

OR Have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and, in addition, successfully complete a re‑specialization program (including an approved internship) meeting both of the following: (a) the re‑specialization program must be completed in an APA‑ or CPA‑accredited doctoral program; (b) the specialty in which the applicant is retrained must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.

OR Have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally‑accredited institution with a primarily psychological dissertation.

Internships: Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program accredited by APA or CPA that is consistent with the assignment; or new VHA programs in process of APA accreditation; or pre‑1979 VHA full‑time one‑year pre‑doctoral internships; or an internship not accredited at the time but currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty consistent with the assignment. School‑board certification must be maintained.

Licensure: Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth.

Exception: Non‑licensed applicants who otherwise meet eligibility may be given a temporary appointment as a “graduate psychologist” at GS‑11 or GS‑12 under 38 U.S.C. § 7405. The psychologist may provide care only under the supervision of a licensed psychologist.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.

Grade Determinations: Entry level GS‑11 requires no additional experience; GS‑12 requires at least one year of experience equivalent to GS‑11; GS‑13 requires at least two years of experience equivalent to GS‑12.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Include knowledge of psychological treatments, assessment methods, ability to design and implement treatment strategies, ability to incorporate new procedures, conduct research activities, and provide basic research documentation.

Assignment: Staff psychologists diagnose mental disorders, conduct assessments, treat disorders through various modalities, provide adjunctive interventions, and may conduct research.

Duties

Provide culturally sensitive care and adapt treatments to meet the needs of Veterans with PTSD, TBI, sensory changes, and/or cognitive changes.

Maintain familiarity with VA/DOD clinical practice guidelines for PTSD and evidence‑based treatments for PTSD and co‑occurring disorders, including depression, substance use, and insomnia.

Provide specialized psychological services at all levels of complexity, including intake evaluation, diagnostic assessments, psychotherapy, and patient/family education.

Offer a full range of therapeutic interventions: individual therapy, group therapy, couples therapy, and psycho‑education classes.

Use valid measurement instruments to monitor treatment progress, guide clinical decision making, and develop treatment plans through shared decision making.

Provide motivational enhancement activities to prepare Veterans for clinically appropriate care and engagement in treatment.

Develop person‑centered, culturally sensitive treatment plans addressing mental health needs.

Conduct evaluations to aid differential diagnosis of complex cases.

Comply with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders.

Ensure continuity of service delivery to PTSD patients and appropriately transition patients out of specialty services when treatment ends.

Implement process and outcome measures to evaluate the impact of specialty mental health services on patients with PTSD.

Complete all required clinical charting and documentation in a timely manner.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
