DEFINITION Performs professional social work services in connection with the treatment of clients in need of mental health services.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS Positions are assigned to psychiatric hospital wards, outpatient mental health clinics, and specialized mental health treatment programs. Under supervision of a higher level Psychiatric Social Worker, a supervisory mental health position, or a psychiatrist, positions perform psychotherapy and clinical case management with clients, families, and significant others to help resolve or find solutions to mental health related problems. Incumbents receive guidance to increase skills in developing culturally and age appropriate psychosocial and emotional assessments, formulating differential diagnoses, and implementing Client Care Coordination Plans (CCCP) to provide appropriate intervention for mental health problems. The Psychiatric Social Worker I is distinguished from Psychiatric Social Worker II in that the latter performs at the full professional level and may provide technical direction and guidance to the Psychiatric Social Worker I. Interviews individuals, families and/or significant others to obtain history.

RESPONSIBILITIES (illustrative)

Interviews individuals, their families and/or significant others to obtain a family, social, employment, medical, substance abuse, and mental health treatment history.

Assesses client functioning in their environmental setting.

Develops a tentative CCCP designed to resolve or cope with the mental or emotional problem, including individual, group, family or marital counseling, case management, and/or referrals to other treatment sources.

Plans and conducts therapy programs under supervision, considering treatment goals, priorities, and modality/duration.

Provides psychotherapy to individuals, groups, families, and significant others.

Provides case management services to secure resources to achieve treatment goals.

Participates in mental health emergency intervention teams and crisis evaluation when necessary.

Requests LPS-authorized persons to complete an application for immediate 72-hour detention at a hospital facility if needed.

Interviews clients seeking psychiatric assistance on an emergency basis and uses crisis intervention techniques.

Discusses reactions and attitudes concerning mental health problems and co-occurring substance abuse with clients, families, and significant others; explains need for treatment and encourages participation.

Works with families toward acceptance and participation in treatment recommendations.

Participates in multi-disciplinary team conferences to discuss client problems, progress, and CCCP development.

Participates in research to enhance knowledge and treatment methods as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS A Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work.

LICENSE A valid and active Associate Clinical Social Worker registration issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Master of Social Work graduates must become registered as an Associate Clinical Social Worker with the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences within 60 days of employment. The registration must be maintained until licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Registered Associate Clinical Social Workers must obtain licensure within six years from the date of registration. Failure to obtain licensure within the timeframe may result in termination.

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed.

PHYSICAL CLASS Physical Class II – Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional lifting to 10 pounds, bending, stooping or squatting; considerable walking may be involved.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION *Withhold Information: Applicants who expect to complete the education requirement by the end of the current semester may compete; proof of graduation is required to be placed on the eligible register. Acceptable proof includes official transcripts and degree certificate, or a Dean’s letter indicating graduation and conferral of degree.

Transcript requirements: foreign degrees must be evaluated for equivalency by an approved credential evaluation service. Official transcript is defined as a transcript bearing the college seal issued by the Registrar. Website printouts are not considered official.

EXAMINATION CONTENT The examination will consist of a Training & Experience Evaluation, weighted 100%, assessing areas such as:

Providing clinical services to clients or patients

Risk management interventions to assess safety

Assessments to render a diagnosis and develop a care plan

Providing case management services

Collaborating with a multidisciplinary treatment team

Applicants must meet the Minimum Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% on the Training & Experience evaluation to be placed on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION Names of candidates who pass will be placed on the eligible register for 12 months. Applications are processed on a rolling basis. Retake: no more than once in a 12-month period.
