Description of Work

This Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team providing early childhood intervention and family support resources to children birth through five years of age with or at risk for disabilities and their families. Specific responsibilities include providing speech and language assessments and evaluations for children with more complex diagnoses, delivering speech-language intervention to enrolled children, instructing parents and other caregivers in communication-related activities to attain desired outcomes, and providing consultation and technical assistance to other staff and community paraprofessionals, professionals and agencies. The SLP also participates in activities to support FIPP’s mission, engage in research studies, and provide professional development and resources to the early intervention community at large.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences

This role involves collaboration within an interdisciplinary team to provide early childhood intervention and family support. KSAs include conducting speech and language assessments and evaluations, providing interventions, and working with families to identify goals and action plans. The candidate should be skilled in communicating with families and collaborating with multiple staff and community contacts. The knowledge, skills and abilities are not mandatory but preferred.

Qualifications and Employment Details

Trainees will be considered if there are no fully qualified applicants. Trainee Appointment requires a Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology from an appropriately accredited institution as required by the NC licensing statute to be eligible for a temporary license issued by the NC Board of Examiners for Speech Language Pathologist and Audiologist. The temporary license must be obtained before the first day of employment. Upon receipt of permanent license (9–12 months), they may move into full class.

This position is exempt from certain provisions of the State Human Resources Act (GS 126). Shift Hours: 1st shift (8:00 am – 5:00 pm), Monday – Friday with variation as needed.

About Family, Infant, and Preschool Program (FIPP)

FIPP is a community-based component of the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center. It is an early childhood intervention and family support program that has supported families in western North Carolina since 1972, aiming to promote optimal health and development of young children and to disseminate research, resources, and professional development opportunities.

About J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center

The J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center (JIRDC) in Morganton, NC is an ICF-certified facility providing residential care to individuals with intellectual disabilities. It serves citizens from 37 western NC counties. The Center is located near Charlotte and Asheville, in the Blue Ridge and South Mountains region, with access to outdoor recreation nearby.
