Summary The Medical Supply Technician (MST) works within the Sterile Processing Service Line at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. The incumbent supplies sterilization, preparation, and disinfection support for reusable medical equipment and supplies.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States (non‑citizens may be appointed when no qualified citizen can be recruited per VA Handbook 5005).
Experience and/or Education
Six months of relevant experience demonstrating the ability to perform the work.
One year above high school with at least 6 semester hours in healthcare related courses (sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, OR technician, etc.).
Equivalent combinations of experience and education are acceptable for entry level.
Certification
None required.
Foreign Education
Education completed outside the U.S. must be credentialed by a recognized organization and deemed equivalent to U.S. programs.
Physical Requirements

English Language Proficiency
Proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Determinations
GS‑3: Entry level—no additional experience/education beyond basic requirements.
GS‑4: Six months experience as an MST or equivalent OR/Tech position; or two years of advanced education with relevant coursework.
GS‑5: One year experience or four academic years above high school (Bachelor’s degree) with relevant coursework.
GS‑6: One year experience.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of universal precautions and cross‑contamination prevention.
Basic medical terminology for instrument set assembly.
Basic knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
Communication skills, both oral and written.
For higher grades: knowledge of surgical instruments, packaging, sterility principles, medical terminology, and the ability to read and interpret procedures.
Preferred Experience
Education or certification in sterile processing (VA Level 2 or CRCST).
Physical Requirements
The role requires walking, carrying, lifting up to 50 lbs, working in hot/cold/drafty environments, and standing throughout the shift.
Duties
Receive contaminated reusable medical equipment and non‑critical items in the decontamination area.
Disassemble equipment and select appropriate cleaning methods (ultrasonic, mechanical washer‑disinfectors, chemical agents).
Inspect, assemble, and determine correct sterilization packaging (steam, Sterrad, Steris, high‑level disinfectants).
Perform and document daily operational checks and records for all processes and equipment.
Work schedule: Monday–Friday with rotating weekends; details discussed in interview.
