Psychiatric Technician
State of Tennessee – Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute, Davidson County, Nashville, TN; Opening Date: 10/28/2025; Closing Date: 11/03/2025; Salary (Annually): $28,188 – $42,228. Full‑Time.
Position: Psychiatric Technician. Duties within a psychiatric hospital. Requires criminal background check.
Overview Under general supervision, responsible for psychiatric technical work of average difficulty; performs related work as required. May work in direct care on patient units in a psychiatric hospital, providing daily living care, individualized teaching, group teaching, and supervised medical assistance. May serve as unit coordinators or admissions clerks.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid motor‑vehicle operator licence (may be required). Some positions require a for‑hire (F) endorsement.
Must successfully complete an approved Psychiatric Technician training course with the State of Tennessee or pass an equivalent examination.
Responsibilities
Provides basic and/or emergency/psychiatric medical assistance under direct supervision.
Rescues injured patients and/or escorts patients during emergencies.
Teaches patients to function at the highest daily living level possible through demonstration, one‑on‑one instruction, videos or booklets.
Promotes social interaction by encouraging patient participation in group activities and/or discussions.
Identifies patients at risk based on assessment and follows protocols to ensure safety.
Monitors medication and meal administration for compliance.
Identifies problematic situations between staff and patients and takes corrective action.
Restrains patients to prevent injuries.
Reports changes in patient behavior; meets with staff to discuss observations.
Cleans work area, supplies, equipment; ensures a sanitary environment.
Inspects patient belongings, rooms for contraband, safety, health issues.
Explains HIPAA laws, patients' rights, and admission procedures to patients, families, and/or conservators.
Maintains HIPAA compliance; attends annual and periodic in‑service training.
