Veterinary Extern - General Practice

NVA General Practice . An externship experience at an NVA hospital gives students the opportunity to understand day-to-day practice operations and gain hands-on clinical experience. Our hospitals share a commitment to excellent medicine, supportive environments, and exceptional service to animals and their guardians. Veterinary externs work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and the medical management of patients. Externs will also practice communication with the medical team, support staff, and clients. Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships at Kentuckiana Animal Clinic. Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click to view the stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
Responsibilities
Gather patient histories and perform physical exams
Develop and implement treatment plans
Order and interpret diagnostics as appropriate
Provide dentistry services and observe/assist or perform surgical procedures
Medical management of patients and coordination of care
Enhance communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients
Qualifications
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education
Open to all class years
Interest in general practice and hands-on clinical experience
