Essential Job Functions The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant II (PNA II) performs moderately complex (journey-level) rehabilitative patient care services under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide quality psychiatric nursing care in an inpatient setting. Primary responsibilities include:
Provide direct patient care and participate in individualized and unit-based programming to support recovery goals.
Maintain direct and ongoing therapeutic interactions with patients to promote living and social skills and progress toward a lesser restrictive environment.
Document patient conditions and behaviors in the electronic health record and communicate with the RN and recovery team.
Assist with activities of daily living, hygiene, and eating to promote independence and self-care; accompany patients to appointments as required.
Provide crisis intervention using verbal de-escalation under RN supervision; respond to psychiatric emergencies with appropriate safety measures (including CPR/Heimlich and AED as trained).
Support the recovery team and admissions team with collaborative verbal and written communications concerning patients.
Assist with monitoring medications and treatments under supervision; monitor vital signs within competency.
Promote safety and environmental awareness to minimize unsafe situations and injuries.
Co-facilitate groups or lead classes/programs; encourage patient participation in programs offered.
Participate in unit-based/hospital-wide committees and quality improvement activities; attend meetings and contribute to departmental goals.
Provide guidance and preceptorship to PNAs in the absence of PNA III/IV as requested.
Perform other duties as assigned, including disaster response or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation and potential alternate shift patterns.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of patient care techniques and of treatment, therapy, developmental, and patient centered recovery programs.
Knowledge of basic computer skills.
Knowledge of effective interpersonal and leadership skills and ability to interact with other team members utilizing effective interpersonal skills.
Skills in taking vital signs.
Ability to read, write and understand English to effectively communicate and carry out verbal and written instructions.
Ability to provide patient care, administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and to conduct TIPS.
Ability to work with others and accept supervision.
Ability to train and provide guidance to others.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements Or Certifications
If transporting patients, must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification for CPR within the first 60 days of employment.
Initial Screening Criteria
High School Graduation
OR
Twelve (12) months’ work experience.
Additional Information
Twelve (12) months of direct care experience is preferred.
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and LEIE.
Males between 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility. Some locations require 21 years of age.
Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and/or extended hours may be required.
Immunization policy applies; vaccine may be required or masking may be required as per policy.
