Essential Job Functions Operates a 24/7 Surface and Groundwater Treatment Plant operation on an assigned 12 hour shift with another operator who has a minimum of a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Surface Water license; ensures correct operation of control panels, pumps, chemical feed equipment, electric motors and other water production/distribution equipment; performs a variety of tests on water for chemical and physical properties and bacterial content; keeps records of amount of chemicals added to water; regulates addition of chemicals to water; maintains records and prepares reports relating to pumping operations and chemical usage; reads level gauges, monitors Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system on computer, monitors and makes necessary corrections and adjustments to treatment process and water availability and pressure to the City; makes pump changes as necessary; cleans and performs general maintenance on pumps, filters, air compressors and other equipment; cleans and maintains the physical property of the surface and groundwater treatment plants and external facilities, dispatches repair crews after-hours in response to customer complaints; answers customer questions/concerns in a polite, considerate, and professional manner.

Other Job Functions Performs other duties as required.

Work Location This position requires 100% on-site work. Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather, exposed to noise, gases, noxious fumes, hazardous chemicals and possibility of falls or electric shocks; required to be available for any shift.

Knowledge Knowledge of the water treatment process preferred; knowledge of the location of plant equipment and other Water Production facilities preferred; knowledge of safety procedures and equipment, including the use of breathing apparatus preferred.

Physical Requirements Ability to perform physical and chemical tests on water samples; ability to use hand tools and perform minor maintenance on equipment; ability to read meters, gauges, and SCADA trends accurately and to maintain records; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees; ability to use a calculator and computer; ability to work alone.

Education / Experience Constantly hears and sees; frequently operates a copier printer machine, answers telephone, uses a calculator, operates a PC, reads, types, writes by hand, reaches, stands, sits, twists body, walks, drives, carries objects weighing up to 55 lbs.; infrequently files, sorts, climbs, crawls, pulls or pushes objects weighing up to 55 lbs.

Driver’s License This position requires 100% on-site work. Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license Class C with good driving record. Other state valid Driver’s License equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency, you must possess a valid Texas driver’s license. Must be able to obtain Class D Water Operators Certificate within one year of employment date and upgrade to Class C Surface Water Operators Certificate before expiration of Class D Certificate. Throughout their employment, applicant must maintain current their required TCEQ Water Operators license, i.e., license must not be allowed to expire. Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a criminal and civil background investigation by the TCEQ and drug/alcohol screen test by the City of Beaumont.
