Responsibilities

Job Description Summary

General Summary

— Under the supervision of the section Supervisor and with direction from the Lead Tech, this position has primary responsibility for the pre-analytical processing of patient specimens that are delivered to the laboratory 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Enters and edits patient demographics in the laboratory and hospital computer systems. Receives, prioritizes, accesses, and distributes clinical specimens to appropriate laboratory sections to meet designated turnaround times. Maintains specimen integrity and serves as a resource to physicians, nurses, and other laboratory personnel regarding specimen handling and processing.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED

Under supervision of the Specimen Management/Microbiology Receiving Supervisor.

Takes direction from the Clinical Support Tech III or Clinical Support Tech IV in the absence of the section Supervisor.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED

Standard office equipment (telephone, PC, copier, printer, scanner, fax).

Software systems such as Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS).

Laboratory equipment including pneumatic tube systems, centrifuges, automated pipetting systems, blood culture systems, and pre-analytical automation as applicable.

Job Responsibilities

Sample Management (30%)

Receives specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations via couriers or pneumatic tube.

Prioritizes handling of stat/urgent specimens and those needing special handling.

Ensures specimen integrity when testing is delayed.

Tracks and receives batches, verifying receipt of specimens.

Prepares specimens for transport to specialized testing areas.

Manages sample archive storage and specimen disposal per guidelines.

Patient Registration and Specimen Log-in (30%)

Registers patient information into the HIS.

Identifies special registrations (e.g., client Bill, research).

Registers patient billing information and logs procedure codes as ordered.

Enters comments from requisitions/physician orders and documents discrepancies as needed.

Administrative Support (20%)

Answers calls with routine information on test results, requirements, turnaround times, and referral laboratories.

Responds to questions from specimen collection locations about transport and minimum volumes.

Notifies ordering providers when tests cannot be performed and assists in resolving issues when possible.

Handles add-ons and transfers of calls as needed; scans requisitions and supports QA data collection.

Lab (Technical) Support (20%)

Assists technologists with pre-analytical processing of select tests, including centrifugation and storage of samples.

Troubleshoots problem specimens with providers and clarifies test selection.

Loads systems for continuous blood culture or pre-analytical automation as applicable.

Monitors temperatures and environmental conditions; participates in QC documentation.

Performs other responsibilities and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Associate's degree or some college coursework in science or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, or certification.

Customer service experience preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology a plus.
