Job Description Summary The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) is a competent registered nurse that will deliver nursing care to patients of varying age groups by utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards. The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) uses:
Nursing Practice Competencies to intervene to achieve safe, optimal patient and family centered care health outcomes;
Leadership Competencies to coordinate patient care and communicate with the care team;
Professional Profile Competencies to develop professionally as a life‑long learner, and
Practice Outcomes Competencies to evaluate care based on evidence, the UofL Health quality model, and patient safety goals.
The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) demonstrates competency caring for complex patients and participates on the care team to improve the quality of care in the clinical area.
Responsibilities
Conduct systematic, continuous and comprehensive assessments of patient health status from admission or encounter to discharge across the care continuum to ensure patient safety.
Independently administer medications per licensure authority, assess and reassess the effects of these medications, and document administration in a timely manner per policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
Plan care using current scientific knowledge, theory, and care standards within the nursing interventions and outcomes framework and national patient safety goals.
Identify and prioritize patient problems based on assessment data, patient safety considerations, patient and family goals and preferences, and nursing interventions and the medical plan of care.
Implement nursing care interventions to meet patient and family centered health care needs.
Assess, conduct, and evaluate outcomes of patient and family teaching from admission to discharge.
Evaluate care by performing regular and systematic reviews of patient/family responses to interventions; revise the multidisciplinary plan of care in collaboration with other care team members.
Serve as an advocate for the patient and family, respecting their rights and preparing them for discharge.
Work collaboratively with appropriate monitoring and delegation, including unlicensed assistive healthcare providers.
Additional Duties
Demonstrate professional conduct and appearance and be accountable for actions and outcomes.
Orient new members of the healthcare team and supervise students.
Act as relief charge nurse when the unit needs arise.
Maintain professional competency through continuing education, licensure and professional activities.
Participate in evidence-based practice activities, such as journal clubs.
Communicate constructively and resolve conflicts within the care team.
Perform duties in a cost-effective manner.
Maintain compliance with company policies and HIPAA privacy and security requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Shift Requirements Shift Length (in hours): Typical 8–12 hours. May offer flexibility for shorter shifts depending on department’s need.
Shift(s) per week: Required hours to meet agreed FTE.
Overtime required: Infrequently; Sometimes; Often (select as appropriate).
Qualifications UofL Health will accept a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) from the NCSBN in lieu of a Kentucky Nursing License, per the KBN.
